[”Las Meninas (Self Portrait)”, 1987 by Joel-Peter Watkin]
Second Street Gallery is hosting Joel Peter Witkin for FOTP and you have to stop by and see it. It definitely stands apart from the other two featured photographers; Mary Ellen Park with her Prom-goer Portraits, and James Nachtwey and his war photography. The latter two are very talented photographers but Witkin is in his own genre. They are not merely photographs but fantastic images of sex, death, and religion. A sign on the door warns, “For Mature Audiences”.

[Panels from the Scrambler series by Rosemarie Fiore]
Last Friday was gorgeous and a great opportunity to see some bright, dynamic, thought-provoking art.
Started at enoteca to see local artist Tammy Reynolds Citron’s show, “Reclaiming the Frame”. Vibrant photos of a tree, a reflection in water, and an Italian village were set behind a window and then the artist finished each scene up onto the grids and frame in acrylic. Your eyes bounced back and forth between the two media and between the dimensions of behind the glass and outside the window. It’s always interesting to see something 2-D painted on something 3-D like that. There were also dress forms made into showy lamps but I wasn’t into them as much.

ART + BOOZE = AWESOME
Absolut Artini started in 2006 as a contest/fundraiser for Second Street Gallery. It featured the works of 9 local artists (Russell U. Richards, Fleming Cunningham Lunsford, Sharon Shapiro, Charles Peale, Lisa Beane, Monty Montgomery, Michael Fitts, Steve Taylor, Sean Samohey) put on collectible coasters to be served at 9 participating bars who also designed art-inspired theme martinis using Absolut vodka. Local judges went around to each place and tasted their Artini and judged which one was the best. The event culminated in a huge bash in the IX building, with vodka flowing, dancing, a rainstorm, beds, and marvelous lighting. »Read More
