We all associate the local university with different things- the football team, the Lawn, the legacy of Southern tradition. But how about adding to that… THE SPOT to make and show art? I read on UVaToday that the Art department has moved into brand-new digs on Culbreath Rd and all programs are now together under one roof. Jane Ford, a senior news officer at UVa tells us that upon entrance in the new Ruffin Hall, “It is immediately evident that the making and displaying of art is serious business at the University of Virginia.”

Next Thursday, September 4 from 6 – 8:30 pm, Second Street Gallery will be announcing their 35th exhibition season with a rooftop celebration and season preview event. The evening will include hors d’oeurvres on the rooftop terrace of the City Center for Contemporary Arts and a presentation of the gallery’s 2008-2009 exhibition season and outreach program.
Tickets are $35 (in honor of the 35th season) each and proceeds benefit Second Street Gallery. Reservations are required.
Second Street Gallery and the City Center for Contemporary Arts are located on the corner of 2nd Street SE and Water Street, just off the Downtown Mall.

The Washington Glass School has three directors who are coming to Charlottesville to display various glass art pieces. The Washington Glass School serves as a mid-Atlantic mecca for glass loving artists. Their mission:
introduce artists in other media to the depth, processes and joys of glass
Tim Tate, Erwin Timmers and Michael Janis, very well known in the glass arts world, will open their exhibit in the Migration Gallery on April 4th from 5:30- 8:00pm. Make sure to ask them lots of questions.
So, when you wander around for First Friday’s make sure you stop by and tell them that MUSE sent you. Their art will be on display through April 30th. Here are some images of the art:
