First Fridays 11.7.08

With a fairly-to-very celebratory, raucous, and costumed week just behind us, I wasn’t entirely convinced there would be a lot going on for First Fridays tomorrow.

Well. Not to wax verbose, but . . .

This needs no introduction – you’ve got Straight Punch to the Crotch, a screening of a Charlottesville Lady Arm Wrestlers film, and an arm-wrestling demo.  Says the Bridge: welcome to a ‘wiki-theater - CLAW is a spontaneously generated, self organized circus. A freak show of the highest order.’ Make yourselves at home. But keep your feet off the couch.

Andrew Hersey’s “Nocturnes” at Mudhouse 11-4-08

Local artist Andrew Hersey is a triple threat- writer, photographer, and painter. His latest works for the upcoming month at a local coffee hangout showcase all of his abilities to storytell using multiple media.

Each little scene appears simple at first- a close up of a foot, a woman looking out a window, two hands clasped together. But upon closer inspection, there are words, in an old typewriter-like font on something in the photo. Words like “nobility”, “foundation”, and “penitent”. The word in the photo ties in with faint words underneath, that serve to elaborate on the word in the photo. In “Hope” (above), a woman lies on a floor amongst broken glass, looking up out of the frame through sheer fabric weighted down with dead leaves, the word “HOPE” spelled out along an edge. Underneath the picture, three groups of words say, “In spite of troubles/Or Discomfort/In spite of Blind Disease.”

First Fridays 10.3.08

Here’s what’s up and what’s going down for all you First Friday-ers.

Shelby Fischer exhibits a collection (”The Eternal Now”) at Les Yeux du Monde. I implore you to go see her pieces: the Hook touches briefly on her “always-interesting” shows, but I don’t think their meager description does her justice.

First Fridays 9.5.08

August droned on for far too long. The prospects of cooler weather (um, maybe), fresh school supplies and a few new happenings at various galleries around town are enough to rouse me from an air-conditioned stupor.

The students are staying on the Corner, so get out, get a drink and see what’s going on at First Fridays this week:

The Bridge opens two new exhibitions: local painter Dave Moore and local photographer Andy Acquaro.

Acquaro’s work is being pulled from his series called ‘Intimate Profiles,’ and the idea is to experience the subjects the same way as if you were standing with them face-to-face.

ARTchitecture taking place this First Friday…

The Charlottesville Community Design Center is hosting architects Robert Mantho and Michael Wenrich Friday for an art installation/architectural collaboration they call “Taking Place“. Michael Wenrich is a UVa grad who works with Formwork Design LLC, a firm that has given us the innovative layouts of Blue Light Grill, enoteca, and Ten.  The two architects have a side project they call LOCUS and they go around creating these architectural installations that they use to, “ pursue the making of architecture as an act of art in a specific place”. »Read More

How About Some Color!?

Pinkie Charlottesville

On this here site… It’s a bit too blue. You can call me “Pinkie”; I’m a local artist. I’ve worked on Artini, Shentai, and the Live Arts afterparties. I’m not going to use my real name because that would lead to way too much self-promotion. I have a Myspace page for that. Suffice it to say, I paint stuff and I love anything to do with art as long as it’s not pretentious or boring.

I’m no art writer but I have been making art all my life so I thought I might try this blog thing out. I won’t be using big stuffy words or making obscure references, just giving you the scoop on local art happenings. I’m not all-knowing though, so feel free to send me news on any events or cool artsy-fartsy types you think should be featured on here.

It’s the beginning of April coming up and you all know what that means…First Fridays! I’d like to take a moment and single out one of this month’s FF artists: Mr. Monty Montgomery. I’m sure you’ve heard of him, he’s only been C-Ville Weekly’s Best Artist of 2005 and shown his works in half the businesses in town, such as Industry, Vanity, Starr Hill, Bittersweet, Mudhouse, and Cassis.

He’s one of the hardest-working artists I’ve ever met, »Read More
