I really can’t think of a better way to end FloydFest7 than with a festival closing performance by the Avett Brothers. The band has earned it, their fans have earned it. Over the last four years FloydFest and the Avett Brothers have in many ways grown up together.
FloydFest has established itself as one of the best festival experiences around (and you can still get up close and personal with every act!) and the Avetts have done nothing but leave everything they have on the stage at every show (and don’t think folks are taking notice). In case you haven’t heard they’ve just signed with American/Columbia Records and Rick Rubin is producing their next album!
The “family affair” comes to a close with all the brothers and sisters gathered at Hill Holler for the Avett Brothers.
Three shows in six days. From Innsbrook Pavilion oustide of Richmond to the always delightful intimate setting of the Gravity Lounge, to a perfect summer evening at the Charlottesville Pavilion, it’s been a pretty good week for live music. I saw the Avett Brothers at Innsbrook for the first time since their Satellite Ballroom appearance in Charlottesville last September. I caught the always entertaining Scott Miller and his solo acoustic set at Gravity last Friday. And I definitely kicked off the work week in fine style with Emmylou Harris’s stunning performance at the Pavilion last night. Like I said, it’s been a pretty good week.
I’ve got a couple more shows on tap for this coming weekend as the Hackensaw Boys help celebrate Gravity Lounge’s Five Year Anniversary on Friday, June 27th and then there’s that little show at the Pavilion on Sunday, June 29th as the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Modest Mouse come to town. But before we go putting our cart in front of our horses so to speak, let’s recap the The Music Seen over the past seven days.
Here’s another upcoming concert that you’ll definitely want to mark on your calendars as the Charlottesville Pavilion welcomes the Drive By Truckers, with opening act The Avett Brothers , to town on Saturday, September 20. Tickets go on sale on Friday, June 20th.
The Drive By Truckers are currently touring behind their most recent album Brighter Than Creation’s Dark (New West) while the hard-travelling Avett Brothers are set to release their latest effort The Second Gleam EP (Ramseur) on July 22.
I like to bring this re-occuring post back from time to time just to see what everyone else is currently enjoying in the turntable of their brains. It’s the tried-and-true “What’s Stuck in Your Head?” musical question. This time around I’ve decided to share a brief collection of songs that I’ve recently discovered or can’t get enough of. I’ll begin with this one:
Bon Iver–”Skinny Love” from For Emma, Forever Ago.
[This one is brand new in the mental playlist. My girlfriend came home from work just yesterday and I asked if I had heard it. I had not. I’ve heard it 6 or 8 times since then. The album is Iver’s solo debut. FYI: last name pronounced “eevair”]
For the rest of the songs currently stuck in my head…. »Read More
