I pulled out an old Peter Case album just to refresh my memory. Case is a fantastic songwriter who is highly respected in some circles, but remains virtually unknown in others. I’ve got Flying Saucer Blues in the CD player right now. If you’re so inclined, check out track 2: “Cool Drink O’ Water”, track 4: “Walking Home Late.”, and track 11: “This Could Be The One”. I’m sure you can find a preview somewhere on the interweb.
Or you could check him out in person, as Peter Case stops by the Gravity Lounge tonight. Case’s most recent album Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John received a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Folk Album. The talented Nathan Moore from over in Staunton, VA opens. Show time is 7:30pm. Cost is $15.

A few things of note taking place over the weekend featuring local artists and venues.
- Local singer-songwriter Jan Smith performs at The Mark Addy Inn Saturday, March 22 from 6:30 to 9:30pm. Reservations suggested. For more info: 361.1101.
- Accordion Death Squad bring the gypsy sounds from the homeland of Ratsylvania to Rapunzel’s in Lovingston Saturday, March 22. Show is at 8pm. Cost is $5.
- Finally, one of the finest songwriters around wraps up the Easter Weekend on Sunday, March 23, as Greg Brown performs at the Gravity Lounge. To date Brown has recorded over 25 albums, with the lion’s share of them on the record label he founded in the early 1980’s, Red House Records. His most recent studio album The Evening Call was released in 2006. You can find a review I wrote for that album here. Show time for Greg Brown is 7pm. I’d get there early. I’m betting this one will be a full house. Tickets are available, although they aren’t cheap. $35, but to see Greg Brown in C’ville is worth every penny.
(Again, I’m out of town this weekend, so I’m probably not going to be seeing any shows. So, if anyone makes it out to these, or any other concerts of note, let me know what you saw and heard. shaun@spicybear.com I’ll make sure to share your thoughts with everyone. Thanks.)
