First Fridays 9.5.08

August droned on for far too long. The prospects of cooler weather (um, maybe), fresh school supplies and a few new happenings at various galleries around town are enough to rouse me from an air-conditioned stupor.

The students are staying on the Corner, so get out, get a drink and see what’s going on at First Fridays this week:

The Bridge opens two new exhibitions: local painter Dave Moore and local photographer Andy Acquaro.

Acquaro’s work is being pulled from his series called ‘Intimate Profiles,’ and the idea is to experience the subjects the same way as if you were standing with them face-to-face.

Getting back on the horse (Pt. 2)

Getting back on the horse, Pt. 1

Back in July I lamented about being in a bit of a rut, creatively speaking. I’d lost the desire and motivation to paint and it was making me feel guilty and inadequate. I wondered how one goes about getting those juices flowing again and we had some very insightful readers chime in with many great ideas.

A fellow artist and friend came to visit me recently and announced the news that he just bought gallery space downtown and was really excited about it, and was I painting anything lately? I floundered and tried to come up with excuses– too busy, always moving, etc… and he laughed at me.

Smashing Pumpkins in Charlottesville – Photo Essay

Halloween came early on Saturday night at the Charlottesville Pavilion. A booming and sometimes scary sonic landscape, stunning visuals, a few creepy costumes, and of course, Smashing Pumpkins. It was quite the treat.

Getting back on the horse (Pt. 1)

Back in January and February I had ideas. I had motivation. I saw photos of beautiful women in magazines or in images on the internet, women standing in front of windows or sitting on the sill, all looking out at something unknown. I feverishly painted the scenes for the promise of an upcoming art show at a local restaurant. Then the restaurant suddenly closed without warning and there went my show and all the work I’d been doing gone to waste. »Read More

Art Gossip: Impressionist painting discovered at Goodwill

At work today, someone told me an interesting story:  a valuable painting was found at the Goodwill on Pantops. They said somebody donated an old painting and a store employee saw a signature on it and it turned out to be by a French Impressionist and ended up being worth $40,000. »Read More

Is there a line for art?

originalnewyorkerthumbnail.jpgIs there a line that art is not supposed to cross? When does art become “tasteless” instead of “satirical”?

The editor of The New Yorker has defended the above cover. Both the Obama and McCain campaigns have decried the imagery utilized on the cover.

Does this cover make us give more validity to the stereotypes it represents? Or does its blatant  representation make us question the accusations thrown about?

“The Underappreciated Art of Firecracker labels”

Since it’s almost Independence day, I’ve been racking my brain for some examples of art that have to do with July 4th. Then I realized that little pieces of art have been under our noses the entire time. On firecracker labels. Have you ever stopped to look at them? There are some pretty cool illustrations on some. Think I’m kidding? Check out some of the fine examples I found… »Read More
