Building Sets at Live Arts

hsmus.jpgLive Arts is seeking volunteers to help build and paint the set for their upcoming production of Disney’s High School Musical! Build dates are as follows:

  • Wed June 18: 6pm-10pm
  • Sat June 21: 10am-2pm
  • Tues June 24: 6pm-10pm
  • Sat June 28: 10am-2pm
  • Tues July 1: 6pm-10pm

Stop by, even if you can only help out for a couple hours!

Be ready to get dirty, play with power tools, and enjoy getting to know some of Charlottesville’s behind-the-scenes technical theater folk!

The Hamner Theater

hamnercabaret.jpgOk, a new theater was put on my radar this week: Hamner Theater of Nelson County. Here are a few upcoming events for them. If you’ve seen shows at this theater or been involved at any point, feel free to post about your experiences.

On June 14 at 7:30pm, they will be hosting TigerLily as part of the Hamner Theater Cabaret series. On July 18, they will be hosting Good Foot Dance Company.

Auditions: Live Arts

doubtparable.jpgLive Arts is gearing up for their upcoming season. Auditions for Doubt: A Parable (by John Patrick Shanley) their first play this coming fall, will take place on July 13 and 14. The cast members as described by the author are:

  • Sister Aloysius (fifties/sixties)
  • Father Flynn (late thirties)
  • Sister James (twenties)
  • Mrs. Muller (around thirty-eight)

Upcoming Bent Improv Theater

bent.pngCharlottesville’s wacky and wild Bent Theater Improve Comedy Troupe is at it again! Catch them at R2 on the Downtown Mall on June 19th at 8pm. Tickets for R2 shows are $5. The Bent Theater performs at R2 every third Thursday of the month.

On June 27, the Bent Theater will be performing at Play On! Theater at 8pm. Tickets are $6 at the door.

American History at Play On!

historyabridged.jpgPlay On! Theater is currently showing Complete History of America (abridged). This production is directed by Derby Thomas and features Aaron Hale, Jake Roth, and Nate Wootten. The show runs through June 22, so call the box office (872-0184) if you want to purchase tickets.

Additionally, Play On! will be holding auditions on July 7 and 9 for their production of The Fantasticks. The Fantasticks is famously known as the world’s longest-running musical, as the original production ran for 17,162 performances (42 years).

Four County Does Shakespeare

asyoulikeit.jpgGet ready for a Shakespearean comedy classic! Four County Players is producing As You Like It this summer. It is directed by John Holdren and features local actors, including but not limited to: Sean Chandler, Chris Estey, Sara Eshleman, Katy Walker, Andrew Willis, Sara Holdren, and Robert Wray. Recently, we saw Chris Estey and Sara Eshleman in Live Arts’ production of Mother Courage and Her Children. Andrew Willis was also at Live Arts for In the Blood, as well as Play On! for Guys and Dolls. Robert Wray may appear familiar to those of you who have seen local commercials. (In one, he is dressed in a smart, black suit along with his counterpart).

The show opens July 25 and runs through August 8. For tickets, call the box office at (540) 832-5355. Four County Players is located at 5256 Governor Barbour Street, Barboursville, Virginia. As You Like It is written for any comedy lover who can follow the cross-dressing, love triangle, boy meets boy meets girl whirlwind of a story!

Upcoming: Bent, String of Pearls

pearls.jpgThe Bent Theatre Live Improv Comedy will be performing in two places this week. On Friday, May 30, you can catch them in Lovingston, VA, at Rapunzel’s Coffee and Books from 8pm-10pm. The address is 924 Front Street. On Saturday, May 31, you can catch them at Play On! Theatre in Charlottesville, from 8pm-10pm. Play On! is located in the Ix building at 983 Second Street S.E. The Bent Theatre has regular performances, every third Thursday of the month, at R2 on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Live Arts’ production of String of Pearls opens this weekend. Written by Michele Lowe and directed by Fran Smith, String of Pearls follows the tail of an heirloom and its role in over 27 characters’ search for love. The cast is made up of four women, who play all 27 characters, so it promises to be an interesting journey every night. Live Arts is located on 123 East Water Street on the Downtown Mall. You can call the box office for tickets at 977-4177. Also, don’t forget that The Beard of Avon is up and running at Live Arts. Renaissance couplets, costumes, and humor make for a winning combination!

Volunteer Open House at Live Arts!

lanewsletter0809.jpgNext month on June 17, Live Arts will be hosting a Volunteer Open House at 123 East Water Street. The fair will be held from 5pm-8pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

The first segment (5pm-6:30pm) will be a casual eat, meet-and-greet atmosphere. The Live Arts staff, local designers, and guild members will be on hand to talk about how they contribute to Live Arts’ productions. In the second segment (6:30pm-8pm), the directors for the 2008-2009 season will talk about the shows they will be directing in the upcoming year.

If you are curious about Live Arts - put this event on your calendar! It will be a great way to see all the dedicated volunteers who bring quality theatre to the Downtown Mall, and find out ways (big or small) you could help out!

The Antoinette Perry Awards, a.k.a. The Tony Awards

tonyaward.jpgThis week, The American Theatre Wing released the nominees for this year’s annual Tony Awards. Making news in the nominations were In the Heights, Patrick Stewart, and the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, among others.

In the Heights was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical. The revival of South Pacific was not far behind with 11 nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical. In the Heights creatively combines Latin music with several vignettes about life in Washington Heights for Latinos. As a landmark musical in theater history, South Pacific joins other Broadway classics, Gypsy, Grease, and Sunday in the Park with George in the Best Revival of a Musical category.
