First Fridays 11.7.08

With a fairly-to-very celebratory, raucous, and costumed week just behind us, I wasn’t entirely convinced there would be a lot going on for First Fridays tomorrow.

Well. Not to wax verbose, but . . .

Billy Hunt: A CLAW to Rememberclaw.jpg

This needs no introduction – you’ve got Straight Punch to the Crotch, a screening of a Charlottesville Lady Arm Wrestlers film, and an arm-wrestling demo.  Says the Bridge: welcome to a ‘wiki-theater - CLAW is a spontaneously generated, self organized circus. A freak show of the highest order.’ Make yourselves at home. But keep your feet off the couch.

The Garage Goes Dressy!

Come out to the Garage tomorrow - Friday - between 6 - 8pm to see the unveiling a giant dressy outfit created specifically for the Garage by local artist and curator of the Garage, Kate Daughdrill.

The Garage’s ‘dressy outfit’ is a form-fitting, vintage piece that falls somewhere between business casual and formal. Play dress-up and head out to the Garage in your own fine frocks to join in on the festivities.

After the First Fridays opening, Dusty Brown (NYC) and Joe Pollock (Charlottesville) will be playing solo shows starting at 8pm. Check out their sites and then come by for a special, intimate night with the two musicians.

For more information, visit www.thegarage-cville.com.

Our favorite couch and chair
The Garage is located on North First Street downtown across from Lee Park.

The Garage will be wearing its outfit all month . . . or for as long as the City allows.

Fall Film Screenings at the Bridge PAI

The Bridge is hosting film screenings this week: head over on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday to score popcorn and fall flicks.

If you haven’t gotten in on their colorful email previews yet, do it - definitely a good idea.

MABUSE THE GAMBLER AND INFERNO WITH JONATHAN ZORN

Wednesday, October 22 and Thursday, October 23, 7pm - $5

The Bridge Fall Film Series continues with another seasonally-appropriate silent horror film, complete with an original score. Due to the length of the film, the Bridge folks are breaking up the Mabuse story into its two original parts:

Mabuse the Gambler: An Image of the Time (Oct. 22)

Inferno: the People of the Time (Oct. 23)

Both evenings will feature an all-new film score, performed live by Charlottesville-based electronics/jazz musician Jonathan Zorn.

A character that Fritz Lang (acclaimed director of M and Metropolis) came back to three times over the course of 40 years, Dr. Mabuse first appeared in this 1922 silent film. Dr. Mabuse is a master of disguise, designed to mimic pulp-style villains like Fu Manchu. Created by Norbert Jacques, the point of the character was to take commercial success of the pulp fictions and to make political comment on the establishment of the era.

This super-villain seizes on the weak and leverages their poverty and weak minds to build a society of malevolence that is often hard to see as different from present day politics.

“Art and charity go together as well as peanut butter and jelly”

So says Candace Schoner, Executive Director and Founder of Virginia Artists In Action (VAIA).

VAIA is a new initiative dedicated to promoting artists who make a difference in the community, and their first show is scheduled for Friday, October 17th, from 5:00 - 7:30pm at 1924 Arlington Boulevard. Gallery space has been donated by Great Graphics and Discount Framing.

Schoner says that her love of art, combined with her desire to support worthwhile causes in Virginia, led to the development of the Charlottesville-based member organization. VAIA “provides increased visibility, profitability, and professionalism for artists who are both passionate about their work and charitable causes.”

This Friday’s event is open to the public and VAIA will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the Nature Conservancy in Virginia.

Featured artists at the inaugural event include locals Ellen Moore Osborne and Robin Hoffman.

To RSVP or to get more information about this week’s event or about the VAIA, Schoner may be reached at director@virginiaartistsinaction.org or at 434.295.4080.

NB: the invitation points you toward Wild Wings. My far-reaching wings knowledge suggests you should head toward BW3 instead to get to the show.

First Fridays 10.3.08

Here’s what’s up and what’s going down for all you First Friday-ers.

Shelby Fischer exhibits a collection (”The Eternal Now”) at Les Yeux du Monde. I implore you to go see her pieces: the Hook touches briefly on her “always-interesting” shows, but I don’t think their meager description does her justice.

Still more alcohol and art . . . tonight!

First Fridays 9.5.08

August droned on for far too long. The prospects of cooler weather (um, maybe), fresh school supplies and a few new happenings at various galleries around town are enough to rouse me from an air-conditioned stupor.

The students are staying on the Corner, so get out, get a drink and see what’s going on at First Fridays this week:

The Bridge opens two new exhibitions: local painter Dave Moore and local photographer Andy Acquaro.

Acquaro’s work is being pulled from his series called ‘Intimate Profiles,’ and the idea is to experience the subjects the same way as if you were standing with them face-to-face.
