The Song of the Day: Viewing the Blue Ridge From Seattle

August 18:  Song of the Day.  Fleet Foxes–Blue Ridge Mountains

Fleet Foxes

We just featured these guys in our Song of the Day spotlight a couple of weeks ago but now they’re back.  The Fleet Foxes continue to gather steam and a ton of critical buzz following the release of their self-titled debut earlier this year.  This song has me scratching my head, reaching for the Kleenex, and saving up my gas money.  It has even created an ‘evil urge’ or two.  Plus, if it’s good enough for Letterman, it’s good enough for me. 1)  This version of “Blue Ridge Mountains”  is taken from the band’s network television debut on Late Night with David Letterman broadcast on August 4, 2008.

2)  On a sad note:  It brings a tear to my ear to think that the Fleet Foxes are just the kind of band that we may not hear in Charlottesville in the coming months now that the proposed deal for the Preston Avenue music hall seems to have fallen through.  It could be Richmond / D.C. or bust for more than a few Charlottesville music fans who are hoping to see some of their favorite bands later on this fall.  Which reminds me, the Fleet Foxes will be at the Black Cat in D.C. on October 3rd.

3)  This song got me thinking.  How did a band from Seattle come to write a song about the Blue Ridge Mountains?  Maybe we can get one of our own local songwriters here in town to write a song about the Cascades just so we can show off our own geography skills.   At least they didn’t pull a John Denver and put the Blue Ridge Mountains into a song about West Virginia.

4)  The vocals at times are eerily similar to those of Jim James of My Morning Jacket fame and I’ve got no problems with that.  [Which also serves as a reminder that MMJ rolls into Charlottesville in a little over 2 weeks.  Officially it’s on Thursday, September 4th if you’re keeping score at home.  Tickets are still available.]

I can’t stop listening to this album. It haunts my dreams. One thing about Blue Ridge Mountains — They only mention them once, and to quote Fleet Foxes, “Over near Tennessee”.

But they did title the song “Blue Ridge Mountains”. :) At any rate, they sounded freakin’ awesome on Letterman. Thinking about heading to the Black Cat to see them live max? Should be a good one.

BTW–”It haunts my dreams”. That’s an endorsement I like a lot!
