This was easily one of my favorite band performances from the entire day at FloydFest on Saturday. Paleface, the folkcore duo of Monica ‘Mo’ Samalot on drums and front man and band namesake Paleface on guitar and harmonica put on one of the most entertaining sets of the day at the Blue Ridge to Bayou Dance Tent. I rolled in just in time to see the start of their early Saturday performance and planted myself right in front of the stage speakers to the right side of the stage and marveled. Tons of sweat flying energy, damn good songs that stomp and rumble, and a beautiful noise that is spreading to ears far and wide.

A sometimes Avett Brothers collaborator (Paleface wrote “Dancin’ Days” which appeared on the Avett’s Four Thieves Gone album. He also appears as a guest vocalist on the album), former roommate of Beck, and a student of the ‘Daniel Johnston School of Music’, Paleface writes them and sings them from the heart. Be looking for his brand new album, which is going to be released by Ramseur Records, the small independent label that is already home to the Avetts and another up-and-coming band, the everybodyfields. A “family affair” indeed.

I’m telling you guys…. the Tea Bazaar is where all the shows happen that 6 months later you’ll see the same guys on a big stage and think ‘I could have seen him play in a room the size of my living room?? what the fuck am I doing complaining about the satellite ballroom closing!’ The Dodo’s, paleface, golden shoulders, I could go on and on…
