Smashing Pumpkins Arrive in Charlottesville on August 16

The latest concert announcement from the folks at the Charlottesville Pavilion is a big one as The Smashing Pumpkins will play in Charlottesville on Saturday, August 16th.  Ticket go on sale this Friday (07/25) at 10am.

It was almost fifteen years ago to the date that the Smashing Pumpkins made their big splash in the music world with the release of the band’s second album Siamese Dream on July 27, 1993  (although I still think their first album Gish is the band’s best album to date).  Between 1993 and 2000, the band, led by frontman Billy Corgan, sold over 18 million records before breaking up in 2000.

Over the next six years following the break-up Corgan would continue to record and perform, briefly forming a new band, Zwan, with Pumpkins’ drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, performing as a member of New Order, and releasing a solo album, TheFutureEmbrace in 2005.  In 2006, Corgan announced that the Smashing Pumpkins were reforming and in July 2007, the band, comprised of Corgan, Chamberlin, and new members Jeff Schroeder (guitar), Ginger Reyes (bass), and Lisa Hamilton (keyboards), released their new album Zeitgeist.  It debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts.  The four-song EP American Gothic followed in January of this year.

And now they’re coming to Charlottesville.  I’m curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on this latest Charlottesville concert announcement.  Excited? Underwhelmed? Indifferent? For a little taste of the Smashing Pumpkins from back in the 90’s, I’ve included the video for “Tonight, Tonight” from the band’s third album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness after the break.  Enjoy.

It’s not Smashing Pumpkins without James Iha. Like The Who without Pete Townshend. UNDERWHELMED! Billy should’ve kept Zwan going with alt-rock heroes from the likes of Chavez riding his coattails.

Oh man, this will be awesome. It will remind me of back when MTV actually played MUSIC VIDEOS.
“Today” is one of my favorite songs.

There’s no D’Arcy either but it should still be fun.

Yawn. Is there even room under that tent for Billy’s oversized ego?

I hope all you SP fans enjoyed buying 5 different versions of the last album.

Here’s another fun fact for you: When the SP did an in-store signing appearance at the Plan 9 in Richmond in 2000, their record label (Virgin) required the store to purchase at least 50 copies of EACH of their releases to have on hand. That was a $2000+ ransom note, for sure.

There was no magic to D’Arcy’s “bass playing” that can’t be replicated by another competent player.
And James Iha is a great rhythm guitar player to be sure. But folks wanna hear the great nasally drone of Billy as well as his milkshake thick guitar work. That plus Jimmy Chamberlain ought to be pretty rockin. Listening free from the bridge should make for a nice evening.

Excited. Billy Corgin and Jimmy Chamberlain still hold it down, I went and saw them last summer in Ashville NC, 900 person venue and it was awesome. People don’t realize the Smashing Pumpkins are still one of the hardest rocking bands period. Listen to Machina II if you don’t believe me, they evolve with every album, instead of just feeding people the same formula. Yeah James and Darcy are gone, but for most everyone’s favorite Smashing Pumpkins LP, Siamese Dream, Billy played almost everything himself in the studio except drums, so the Smashing Pumpkins you loved back then was Corgin and Chamberlin just like it is now. So this is most def not the Who without Townshend. I’m sure many people will come who only know Today, Disarm, or Tonight Tonight, and I hope Billy hits them with songs like Shattering Glass or Everlasting Gaze to let them know how hard the Smashing Pumpkins rock. The Smashing Pumpkins are easily one of the best Rock bands in the last two decades. Chamberlin drums like an animal, and Billy’s ego is excuseable with the way he plays.
