06/24: Song of the Day. Weezer–Say It Ain’t So
hootenanny: a meeting of folk singers, as for public entertainment.
So as the band Weezer has been moving through their West Coast tour in support of their new Red Album, they’ve been inviting local musicians, singers, and music fans in general to join them for a special hootenanny performance along the way. The hootenannies have been recorded live during the day in each city of the tour and then broadcast over local radio stations.
Last week the band posted a YouTube video in advance of the upcoming tour dates, explaining the whole hootenanny concept and letting fans know which songs they would be required to learn in order to participate. The Hootenanny concept video is posted below:
Weezer Explains the Hootenanny Concept
To date, five cities have played host to Weezer’s Hootenanny and most of the performances have now made their way onto the tangled web of tubes we call the interweb. Included after the jump, is the Weezer Hootenanny performance of “Say It Ain’t So”

Anyone who says they don’t love Weezer is a liar. I used to refer to it as ‘the problem of Weezer’ - everyone loves them but some people don’t want to admit it. I can safely (and accurately) say that I don’t have any interest in this Hootenanny concept UNLESS they only play songs from Pinkerton. Or just play Pinkerton from start to finish. I could be into that. It is, after all, one of the great albums of our generation. I think that everyone but Rivers can agree on that. Why can’t he admit that was his masterpiece - his gift to the kids who aren’t fratboys pounding their fists to Say it Aint So or Beverly Hills?

@1: Me and the BF had a long and involved discussion about Pinkerton vs. the Blue Album at Blue Moon diner the other day that made me realize I’m way more into/ know more about Weezer than I ever realized.
But ANYHOO I totally had a dream that Rivers Cuomo was at my parents’ house last night. Things were getting steamy and then my cat woke me up. Damn cat.
P.S. That’s a cool video but that’s not really what I would call a hootenanny. They should’ve done a more upbeat song like “El Scorcho”.
Boy they really DID do it right with Pinkerton, didnt they? I’ve heard from a number of girls that it’s really a ‘guy’ album whatever that means. Maybe it’s cause it is angsty? I dont know - I don’t really see it. I would also wager that most of the weezer fans who might go to a ‘hootenanny’ probably wouldn’t be able to play El Scorcho. And that’s a damn shame.
/Will bring home the turkey if you bring home the bacon.
@3: Love the blue album but Pinkerton is really a different work that should be considered aside from the other albums. It was the first cd of theirs I bought. I love that it seems like just another album but it’s really a story- of his obsession with asian culture, (esp. asian girls) that also refers to a classic opera.
FYI–there should be Hootenanny performances of El Scorcho up soon. Also you guys should check out the Hootenanny performance of Radiohead’s “Creep” in Portland. Interesting at the very least to see Weezer and fans doing Yorke and company.
here’s the Creep performance link:

maybe you’ll like it maybe you won’t, be you won’t know unless you check it out
Man I can’t imagine hearing the blue album after Pinkerton. I agree it is way different, and I think it’s the only one they produced on their own without Ric Ocasek (from the Cars)? Not to bash Ocasek - because he has done some amazing shit (the blue album and Bad Brains’ Rock For Light among them) - but Weezer to me hasn’t really grown. They lost Matt Sharp after Pinkerton and that also sucked. I felt like Rivers took this huge step forward and when it was a commercial flop his poor self-esteem left him to not be interested in doing an album for five years. And when he finally did it was a poor rehash of the blue album (even though it sold well I guess). It just makes me a little sad.
/why bother?
