cvilleMUSE Mixtape 5: Put on Your Walkin’ Shoes

I really like to add these mixes to pages of MUSE because it really gets a lot of great responses from readers and it allows folks to throw in a little bit of their own flavor to the MUSE stew.  So let’s kick off the week with another Mixtape!  I was checking out a really cool L.A.-based blog over the weekend and they had done a series of posts on songs about shoes.  I hadn’t given it much thought until I saw it, but there really are a lot of tunes relating to footwear.

So let’s see what we can come up with.  Songs about shoes, footwear, boots, etc.  I’ll let you guys start.  First one in, gets the first song and so on and so on.  As always, add a video URL along with your song choice and let’s see where we end up.  We’ll call this one:  A Nice Pair of Kicks.  (and since shoes come in pairs, if you’ve got two songs that’s even better)

Thanks fellas (squid and byard). Vids have been posted. And just so everyone knows…because we’re giving everyone the option to add one song or two, we’ll be taking 20 total submissions. So there’s still lot’s of room left for those who haven’t played yet. Keep em coming.

(and while the last selections aren’t directly about shoes, we’re always open for a little personal interpretation)

  22. 23 Jun 2008 at 6:18 pmByard said:

Well I though Footprints was obvious. I mean its about feet. And shoes are footwear… At any rate here is one that has shoes in the title and may replace footprints on the mix…but I do really like the Footprints song and version.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpQ_nUqu554

It’s a Charlie Parker composition called “my little Suede Shoes” and is to my knowledge the only Calypso tune Parker ever wrote. It is here played by the incredible Roy Haynes on drums and Monty Alexander on piano. The rest of the band sits out because the two of them shift the Rhythms so much that the other more traditional bop players can’t handle it.

  23. 23 Jun 2008 at 9:56 pmShaun Harvey said:

@22. No seriously I’ve got no problems with Footprints at all, just letting folks know that the songs don’t have to necessarily have shoes in the title…personal interpretation is a good thing! Footprints stays for sure! And I’ll add My Little Suede Shoes to the mix. Thanks byard.

Having a pair of retro Nike or Adidas with patterns on them seems to work well with today’s music. My addition this time is more modern and welcomes dancers retro-fitted in Chuck Taylors and Shell Toes to do the two step.

    Get your dancing shoes on.

@27. I was wondering who was going to pull that one out. A nice follow up to that would be RunDMC and Aerosmith doing Walk This Way.

But here’s my second song choice for inclusion in the mix: I haven’t heard kathleen edwards’s latest but her first two albums are great. this one is from failier.

I have to add one more because of a strange random coincidence. My computer is currently surrounded by stacks of CDs…I’m not sure exactly why or how it happened but either way, there they are, all piled up on either side of my keyboard.

So I just happened to glance over at one stack a moment ago and noticed Stephen Malkmus’s Face the Truth album on top. For no real reason other than to check out once again the songs on the album, I picked it up and started scanning down the track listings. If you have the album you know what I eventually discovered…track 6…appropriately titled:

    No More Shoes

    Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC3CCA2zHHg

    How beautifully random!
