Tasty Treats: A Summer Sound Sampler

summertime

It’s the last day of spring everyone!  The summer solstice rolls around tomorrow, bringing us the longest day of the year while kicking off weeks off good times to come.  We’ve got lazy Sundays floating on the James, the smells of backyard barbecues, fireworks on the 4th of July, and plenty of outdoor music events to pretty much keep you busy all summer long.  So to celebrate the upcoming summer concert line-up at the Charlottesville Pavilion I’ve put together a ten song music video sampler featuring the artists that will be filling the east end of the Downtown Mall with tasty treats for the eyes and ears all the way up through the first days of fall.  Enjoy and save some of that watermelon for me!

All of the artists featured below will be performing live at the Charlotteville Pavilion over the coming weeks and months.  You can find a complete concert listing as well as links to ticket information here.  And while you’re at it, why don’t you let us know which shows you are most looking forward to seeing under Charlottesville’s outdoor big top.

Just a note too: A couple of the artists above are actually opening for other artists: Grace Potter opening for the Crowes, Jackie Greene opening for Phil and Friends, and Scott Avett along with the rest of the Avett Brothers opening for Drive By Truckers. Of the three, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and the Avetts are not to be missed. Grace Potter is the best thing to come out of Vermont in quite some time! And the Avetts in my opinion are going to be headlining the Pavilion in the next couple years. Both are bands to watch! BTW–no disrespect to Jackie Greene, who is a stellar singer/songwriter. Check out his album Sweet Somewhere Bound!! Plus Jackie is one of the friends in Phil Lesh and Friends.

not trying to be an *ss….i’m looking for honest feedback on what people see in Modest Mouse. it’s obvious that they are extremely popular. i have a lot of friends who are really into them. i just don’t get it. what am i missing?

@3. I don’t know that you’re missing anything Brian. To be honest, it took me awhile to really warm up to Modest Mouse. I would consider myself a fan, but I’m not a fanatic by any stretch of the imagination. I’m curious to see their live show because the reviews have been mixed from what I’ve heard and read. I’ve enjoyed their last two records a lot I just hope they don’t turn out to be one of those bands that sound good in the studio but come up short live. One thing that I think is going to elevate the upcoming C’ville show could be the addition of the Dirty Dozen joining them onstage (which I have to think will definitely happen). I guess we’ll see for ourselves. In the end though, music is a crazy thing…it’s subjective as hell. Some like coffee, some like tea. I hope a few diehard Modest Mouse fans will add their own two cents, because my insights to your question have come up on the short end of the stick. :)

i know it’s a difficult question. i’d be hard pressed to explain why i like a lot of the music i like. i also know that i’m not exactly a person who is hip to a lot of “indie’ music (although i don’t really think you could call Modest Mouse that anymore). i could list the reasons why they turn me off, but i won’t. i WANT to like them, and am honestly wondering if i just haven’t heard the right song, or maybe it’s the lyrics, etc etc…i like The Smiths, and it’s great that Johnny Marr is playing with them now, but…

@2 I may be outing myself a bit here but Grace Potter and I grew up in the same small town in Vermont. I didn’t know her - but then I was only like 4. My folks were friends with her folks I think, but in a town of 300 everyone sort of knows everyone. She’s got a killer voice and she’s also quite a fox!

@6 another great performance right there! i noticed a few folks had comments to the video that I almost expressed in my first comment and that’s the similarities between between Grace and Susan Tedeschi.

I too grew up in one of those small towns (about 250 in my hometown) so I can relate to the everyone knows everyone vibe. :)

I’m looking forward to P&F. Went last summer, and it was the best show I’ve ever seen in Charlottesville. But then again, I’m a big Dead fan, so that makes me less than impartial. Also, @8, interesting to refer to it as a JG/Phil show. Is that how it’s being billed?

  11. 22 Jun 2008 at 10:19 amShaun Harvey said:

@10. I don’t think it’s being billed as Jackie Greene and Phil and Friends…but I almost 95% certain that Jackie will be performing an opening set before joining P&F in the headlining set. (notice i’ve left myself 5% of space to be wrong…because it happens from time to time) :)

and just as one final note: (in order of personal preference)

    1. MMJ (I’ve really grown to love the new album Evil Urges and I’ve wanted to see these guys for a couple years now…for regular readers this should come as no surprise)

    2. DBT/Avetts (this one is going to be whiskey soaked and full of sweat, the air should be filled with sweetness, harmonies, and rock n roll…if both bands are on their game this could be one big Hell Yeah!)

    3. Grace Potter/Black Crowes (when first announced I didn’t give this one a lot of thought…as it grows closer, I’m actually pretty psyched…the Crowes seem back on their game and Grace, as I’ve already mentioned, brings it!)

    4. Willie Nelson (this will be my third Willie show. Say it with me now: Whiskey River take my mind!)

    5. To be honest I’m gonna have to say B.B. King (if only because he’s a legend and I haven’t seen him to date. Understandly B.B. is slowin’ down a lot, he is 82 I believe, but damn he’s B.B. freakin’ King. And to balance it all out, the young gun, local blues wiz Eli Cook opens)
