I’ve used the Roman numeral expression for 4 in this fourth edition of the Mix Tape series to bring attention to the fact that our Mix Tape segment has been on life support lately. It’s currently in intensive care with a slow IV drip of morphine to kill the pain. If I’m not mistaken our last mix tape has gone un-finished. Sad but true. See for yourself:
So let’s see if we can’t get this thing back on its feet. Or at the very least send it a card or some flowers. And since we’ve made mention of the numbers game, I’ve decided to pull out a theme suggestion from one of our readers. Dan from Eppie’s suggested we do a mix with a numbers theme in an earlier Mix Tape thread, so why not? We’re dialing it in: This our 867-5309 Mix. And for a change of pace, the first one in gets to start things off. (Don’t forget to add those video URL’s to your song selection). Let’s see who’s call gets in first. Operators are standing by waiting to assist you.

as always the theme is open to your interpretation. Numbers in any fashion or form.
Because Benny and Joon is my favorite movie, and because I love to do the head bob to this song:
I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) - The Proclaimers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3tNylJr7Z4
Well you could interpret that as a “telephone” theme, in which case you could kick it off with
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTVANp6Psd4
(btw, I think its a bad idea to have the theme be an actual song name… just saying)
But if you went the “numbers” route, then the obvious opener is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InUw3FZy4dw
(new post to avoid the “awaiting moderation multilink feature of fail this site has)
And if you wanted to kick life into this idea, you should wait until all submissions are in, then use a web based stream ripper (like vixy) to extract the audio from the youtube vid, compile it into an mp3 file and host it on a file sharing site like mediafire.
Super easy, and then folks could *have* an actual mixtape.
/but what do I know, y’all aren’t even interested in my mixes… *sniff*
Or maybe numbers 1-10, in which this might be nice:

The number two: TMBG

@2. well you get to start things off…and I’ll thank you in advance for bringing back a song that I’ll probably have stuck in my head all day…prompting me to try and clean out my head with a plastic fork.
@3. Sorry bout the song title in theme but I was simply hoping to take that song off the table from the start.

wow, okay, I guess I missed my shot here. That was fast.
These things are way better when you get a variety of contributors. You should ignore all my posts after the first two, I was just being obnoxious. Shaun tends to completely ignore everything I suggest or mention (and then complain that its dead over here), so I thought I’d go over the top for once. Kind of a swan song, if you will.
Seven Come Eleven
http://youtube.com/watch?v=lILSP-enbJw
oh, okay, well, I’m resisting the first song that popped into my head (the ubiquitous Feist song 1234. Way overplayed, so I’m sparing you guys) in favor of 52 Girls by the B-52s. I don’t think there are numbers anywhere but in the title. Anyway, here it is:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=NgCrj7J3evc
dedicated to belmont, yo for his work on this mix tape:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e7yYBDHOgg
and one of my favorite number songs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-YcBVEnLT8&feature=related
and since i seem to be working this old school style:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxmKRyLdBho&feature=related
and i can’t not submit this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_Mm6Dzyars&feature=related
I think I love mc. That’s my favorite B-52s song of all time.
This is for you mc:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=7K6NFqP3a4o
oh, and this, too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-tse0HjDVQ
(since it is a tape- you could find better audio quality of all these, but linking to youtube is easier and has some moving things to look at, i suppose).
whoa…step away for a moment and the world gets a little crazy…alright we’ve got tons of updating to do here…so lets see I’ll get videos posted soon. to try and keep this as varied as possible i’ll start by using one video from everyone (even though I could create an entire mix from b’yo alone…which I might add has my operators demanding overtime).
so i’ve got the proclaimers, blondie, the beatles, danny gatton, b-52’s, the pointer sister’s pinball classic!!, and a second b-52s number from squid (with love to mc). now if i can just keep my computer from crashing for another thirty minutes or so, i’ll get this done.
@22. i’m not sure what i’ve ignored, but if i have, it’s been an oversight on my part and i apologize. but i know that i have never complained about that it being dead here. as a matter of fact i feel that the opposite is true. of course if you’re comparing it to cvillain then by appearances it can appear so, but the two are really apples and oranges. one is not to necessarily mirror the other.
@28. Shaun… This Mix Tape should be the best so far.
Can we base “Mix Tape V” on Trains, Planes and Automobiles?
/No particular reason why!
While I love some of Four Tet’s remixes (that was an excellent song, hadn’t heard it)… it seems kind of like a cop out (though admittedly finding a four choice seems a bit tough)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Wikilists/List_of_songs_with_numbers_in_the_title
There’s a ton… but Ryan Adams ‘Two’ is a good one also (this is a great version).

Oh! And how can you not go with Song 2?

series to bring attention to the fact that our Mix Tape segment has been on life support lately. It’s currently in intensive care with a slow IV drip of morphine to kill the pain. If I’m not mistaken our last mix tape has gone un-finished. Sad but true.
and
have never complained about that it being dead here
I see. Do go on.
As far as ignoring, I have suggested some ideas for regular topics *crickets*. I have asked how I can submit things *crickets*. I have asked for a wider range of music - beyond banjo jamband stringy feeling folk, and offered to do it myself. *crickets* I have asked if it was even you that I need to be asking these questions and took your copious silence as a “no”. So I wandered off, and now only return when I am so very very bored, or when shen prods over on the red side.
I aint mad at you or anything like that. No worries. I just like to run my mouth, you know? Please carry on. I will shut up about it now and wander off to find someone else to electronically harass.
kids, i’ll have to pick this up later tonight…right now i gotta run. i’ve got an avett brothers show i gotta catch.
b’yo: I’ve talked to the powers that be about a little reorganization. I’d like to have a column for reviews so that if I write one it doesnt get swallowed up by song of the day, mixtapes, show announcements, etc. Not that these are bad things - they just swallow my efforts quickly. That’s been my one frustration and I think (hope) they’re working on it.
I also like to run my mouth and welcome electronic harassment. I want a ‘Notes of a Dirty Old Man’ type section. Maybe together we can make this happen. We both know people.
And the party continues. Here’s Mariah Carey, “Can I Get Your Number.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZUQo1nLzwk
/ Let’s party.
@33. How about having “The Suggestion Box,” which works just like the “Free for All” on the red side?
I realize that the tape is probably full. But here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ys7IP8mtN4
“Einstein on the beach” has no number in the title, but as soon as you give it a listen you will see the connection (or hear the connection rather). Also I like this clip because someone made a Lego Ballet for the music…
@26: awww, that’s very nice! and also a more appropriate selection from the two’s. well done.
@33 ha. that’s my complaint? the one thing that is lost on the ol internet is tone, you pretty much have to read it straight sometimes. but i was just trying to toss a spotlight back on the mix with the hopes that someone who didn’t catch it the first time around would throw in their two cents. but no worries.
@32. nice addition to the mix. Song 2 is in the mix!
@38. i think we can probably slide what you got in byard. at #9.
@35 i would say just write it man. there’s a lot we all write that gets swallowed up. but just write it…in the end nothing we write is the declaration of independence. it’s a record review and people we always appreciate the fact that you took the time to write about something you love…music.
and to all, i know that this isn’t a perfect process, but thanks for playing!
And for those who submitted videos we didn’t use, we may end up doing a part 2 to this theme somewhere down the road so keep those songs in mind.
here’s my choice from toots and the maytals 54-46 was my number

OH, COME ON, PEOPLE….
possibly the three MOST important numbers on the PLANET!!!

@41: That song is HILARIOUS. Good one Sarah B.
I love me some Violent Femmes
We’ll definitely after to do a Numbers Mix Disc 2. There have been some fantastic selections that we never even used in this one. Thanks again to Dan from Eppie’s for the theme suggestion. By the way if anyone has any suggestions for future mix themes, feel free to send them along in the comments section here. Thanks.
