The Last Shows of Spring Pt. 1: Lucy Wainwright-Roche

Beginning next week a couple of Charlottesville’s bigger concert stages will be taking the spotlight as the Charlottesville Pavilion  and the Paramount Theater kick off the summer season with a string of performances.  The Pavilion has a string of shows in the coming weeks with  Emmylou Harris on Monday, June 23, Modest Mouse on Sunday, June 29, The Black Crowes on Saturday, July 5, and Phil Lesh and Friends on Tuesday, July 9.  Then add to that, the Paramount Theater’s upcoming Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet show on Friday, June 27, and you can see how things will be heating up pretty quickly on the concert scene as June begins to come to a close.

But before we get into all of the shows listed above, let’s not overlook the fact that there are still a number of high-quality shows on tap for the week ahead.  In particular we thought we’d focus your attention towards a trio of upcoming concerts beginning tomorrow and continuing through Friday at the Gravity Lounge.  You can wrap up spring in fine style as Charlottesville’s coziest listening room offers up performances this week by Lucy Wainwright-Roche, Will Hoge, and Scott Miller.  We’ll highlight the first of these three shows after the jump with additional features coming up tomorrow and Thursday.

Lucy Wainwright-Roche [photo @ artist's MySpace]The daughter of singer-songwriters Loudon Wainwright III and Suzy Roche, Lucy Wainwright-Roche has only recently begin to explore her own musical career.  Prior to the start of 2007, she was still teaching elementary school kids in New York City while only occassionally joining her brother Rufus Wainwright onstage as a back-up singer.

But as 2007 got underway, Lucy decided to take a break from teaching in order to give the family business of singing and songwriting a go.  With the release of her widely-praised debut album 8 Songs in 2007 and the follow-up album 8 More just last month, Lucy now finds herself  following in the slightly more famous footsteps of brother Rufus and sister Martha Wainwright.

Not to be taken as just another name in a family chock-full of fabulous singer/songwriters, Lucy Wainwright-Roche has begun to establish herself as a wonderfully talented artist in her own right.  This is what NPR’s Song of the Day had to say following the release of her debut album:

.

Sincere and raw, at times recalling Joni Mitchell and Patty Griffin, Roche’s bittersweet voice leaps out; she paints an indelible image…

Lucy Wainwright-Roche performs In The Round with fellow singer/songwriters Rebecca Pronsky and Carleigh Nesbit on Wednesday, June 18 at the Gravity Lounge.  Admission price is $2!!! Doors open at 7:30pm.

Coming tomorrow:  Will Hoge preview
Coming Thursday:  Scott Miller preview
