Paul Curreri and Devon Sproule: Sharing the Love

Curreri and Sproule [photo by Scott Elmquist]Here’s a little something I recently discovered for all you Paul Curreri and Devon Sproule fans out there (which includes yours truly).  Of course you hardcore fans may already be one step ahead of me, but I’ve always been a little slow.  But just in case you’re not already in the know, you should stop by Paul Curreri’s website and check out The Valentine Duets, a series of compilation albums recorded by Devon and Paul over the past five years that are available for download free of charge.

There are five albums in all, recorded between 2003 and 2008, and as one would expect from a series called The Valentine Duets, each album features songs in the spirit of love and longing.  Included are a few original tunes but most of the material comes from the songbooks of a wide range of artists such as John Prine, Hank Williams, The Beatles, and Duke Ellington to name a few.  To get your own copy of The Valentine Duets series click here

And while you’re at it, check out both artist’s websites and maybe pick up a copy of Devon’s most recent album Keep Your Silver Shined or Paul’s latest offering The Velvet Rut (or be a little adventurous and get them both!).  They come highly recommended and in a way this gives you an opportunity to return the love for two of Charlottesville’s brightest musical stars.

That’s great. Both of them have the uncanny ability to let the music play them. It’s like they are in a trance or something. So jealous, I am.

They are the cutest little songbirds. You can usually catch them together at New Year’s or Valentine’s day at Gravity. Keep Your Silver Shined is awesome too!

I heard it’s really actually hard for them to sing together though it seems more natural than it is… Maybe it’s because they both are songwriters and both going after the same goals individually… Interesting huh?

I like your musician’s input Byard. I had no idea it was hard for them! They always sound amazing.

It’s amazing for me to see Paul’s success. He and I went to high school together. His younger brother and I were really good friends, and actually played in our first band ever. (I’ll have to write a post about that.) I remember shooting hoops in thier driveway and thier huge poodle, Rocky, would chase errant balls into the woods.

Paul was always a piano player in my mind, and I thought he was crazy for ditching that to play banjo and guitar. I’m sure glad he did. He’s so down to earth, too. I went to see him at Floyd Fest last year, and as he was packing up his guitar, I caught his eye, and he called out my name. I hadn’t seen him in years. I didn’t even think he’d reccognize me. I felt so cool.

Hey guys. Anyone go to the Acoustic Mafia show at Satellite? I heard a spurious rumour that Paul Curreri got intense on an audience member at that show. Anyone care to deny or support that claim?
