First Fridays 6-6-08

[photo from UVa’s Arts & Sciences magazine]

Tonight’s gonna be art-ilicious so don’t let the heat keep you at home. Here are my picks for this evening’s art scene:

MCGUFFEY: Famous female photog Mary Ellen Mark, one of the headliners for this year’s Festival of the Photograph, is showing “Prom USA” : black and white photos of promgoers, including some of local CHS students. “In Charlottesville, she was struck mostly by the diversity of the students,” says Daniel Neman in the Richmond Times Dispatch. There’s even an article in the Washington Post about them here. It says she took them with a 600 pound Polaroid. Whoa. 5:30- 7:30 pm. 201 Second Street NW

OUTDOOR EXHIBIT: Huge photos of whales (Flip Nicklin- the premier whale photographer in the world, according to National Geographic) decorating the trees along the Downtown mall. Can anybody get a picture and send it to us? This dude apparently dives up to 90 feet to take these amazing pics. It may be hot as hell right now but looking at these pics makes me feel a little cooler.

ART EXCHANGE: Steve Keene art swap at the Paramount theater. If you haven’t heard of this guy, he’s a prolific painter from here, dubbed “The Assembly Line Picasso” in Time magazine) who sells his pieces at really low prices so that everybody can have a little more art in their life. Community members are invited to come swap their current SK possessions for some fresh ones. Even if you don’t have one yourself, it should be fun to watch. Starts at 5pm. 215 East Main Street.

DO IT YOURSELF ART EXHIBIT: You can show your own photos at Yourspace in the CCDC in the Market St. parking garage. You just bring the files and print them out there. Starts at 5:30. Theme and requirements on FOTP’s site. Go see what kind of amateur photographers we got going on here in C-ville.

There are of course, MANY other shows going on. Feel free to promote any particular ones that you know of!

I’m really looking forward to the Steve Keene event, somehow I’ve managed to spent 10+ years in this town without owning any of his paintings?! Maybe I can pick one or two up tonight? ALSO: CLAW photos by Billy Hunt? at Cafe Cubano starting tonight!

Are they the same ones he has on his website?

No. The ones I’ve seen which will be at CC aren’t on his site (maybe with the exception of one or two?)

James Nachtwey’s war photography at Les Yeux is stunning. In one, little girls in party dresses cover their ears as a helicopter roars by. In another, huge haunted eyes look into the camera as a murder victim lies on the sidewalk in the background. Another shows a family setting the emaciated corpse of their daughter on a blanket. Another puts you right behind a man getting ready to lob a Molotov cocktail, the image so vivid you don’t stand too close to the print. I ended up having to leave before looking at all the photos, because they were so raw and disturbing and tragic.
