Once again, I’ve collected some musical tidbits to share with our MUSE readers that come from around Charlottesville as well as from around the musical globe. From a local Plan 9 Music sale to newly discovered music from Los Campesinos, from the end of The Dawning at Outback Lodge to Tom Waits interviewing himself, I’ve got all that and a little bit more after the break, but first…
…We begin by giving you another reason to stay in bed: PEACE. On this date, May 21, 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono began their infamous “bed-in” for peace at a Montreal hotel. So if you’re feeling the need to use one of those sick days today, save it. Instead call the boss and tell him/her you’re sleeping in for peace. For the rest of my musical leftovers…

It’s New To Me (And I Like It!)
There’s too much music out there to keep up with it all. So while the band Los Campesinos! may not be new to some of our readers, it’s new to me. I found this one from the British 7-piece on YouTube and I like it very much. What do you think?
You! Me! Dancing! by Los Campesinos!

More from Tom Waits
Who better to sit down and ask the always entertaining and quite eccentric Tom Waits the real burning questions than…Tom Waits? Yesterday on the Anti- Records music blog Tom Waits posted an interview with himself. The Q & A session is at times hilarious and even in some ways insightful.
The biggest news from the wacked out interview highlights the fact that Waits will be playing The Devil in the forthcoming Terry Gilliam film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, due in theaters next year. (The film also stars Johnny Depp, Christopher Plummer, and Colin Farrell). Seems like a perfect role for Mr. Waits to me! Below is one of my favorite excerpts from the interview. You can find the entire interview of Waits on Waits here. Waits’ 13-date, U.S. tour, “Glitter and Doom”, kicks off June 17 in Phoenix, AZ.
Q: What’s wrong with the world?
A: We are buried beneath the weight of information, which is being confused with knowledge; quantity is being confused with abundance and wealth with happiness. Leona Helmsley’s dog made 12 million last year… and Dean McLaine, a farmer in Ohio made $30,000. It’s just a gigantic version of the madness that grows in every one of our brains. We are monkeys with money and guns.
- Coming to a Venue Near Us
Here are a couple of shows coming up between now and the end of summer that have recently been announced that you might want to check out:
–106.1 The Corner presents a free show with Teddy Thompson, Lucy Wainwright Roche (Rufus Wainwright’s sister btw), and The Gray Race on June 18 at Gravity Lounge.
–The Paramount Theater welcomes Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby to Charlottesville on September 8. (I saw this pair in San Francisco in October and I have to say, watching 100,000 people kick up a storm was a hell of a sight!)
–Eilen Jewell (pictured) hits the Gravity Lounge on September 17. If you’re a fan of Gillian Welch, Robinella, or 1920’s era jazzed-up, bluesy country take note!

- KXEP and the Avett Brothers
Seattle super station KXEP recently hosted The Avett Brothers live in the studio for an interview and a few songs, including two new cuts, “Late In Life (Frozen in My Tracks)” and a version of Tom T. Hall’s “That’s How I Got to Memphis”. The Avetts’ forthcoming album The Second Gleam hits stores in July. You can hear the entire in-studio performance here.
- Adding to my collection
I recently added some more vinyl to the ever-growing collection, highlighted by picking up the 1968 classic Super Sessions featuring Mike Bloomfield (of Electric Flag), Al Kooper (of Blood, Sweat, and Tears), and Stephen Stills (of Buffalo Springfield and CSNY). It’s a late 60’s blues classic if you ask me. In mint condition, the listed price was only $8!

Bob Dylan Turns 67!
And last but not least, born on May 24, 1941, Bob Dylan celebrates his 67th birthday this Saturday. Happy freakin’ birthday to Bob Dylan!!! The times may change, but Dylan is still timeless to my ears. Any favorite Dylan songs you’d care to share? Maybe that will be our next mix tape? The Bob Dylan Songbook. We’ll see.
