Volunteer Open House at Live Arts!

lanewsletter0809.jpgNext month on June 17, Live Arts will be hosting a Volunteer Open House at 123 East Water Street. The fair will be held from 5pm-8pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

The first segment (5pm-6:30pm) will be a casual eat, meet-and-greet atmosphere. The Live Arts staff, local designers, and guild members will be on hand to talk about how they contribute to Live Arts’ productions. In the second segment (6:30pm-8pm), the directors for the 2008-2009 season will talk about the shows they will be directing in the upcoming year.

If you are curious about Live Arts - put this event on your calendar! It will be a great way to see all the dedicated volunteers who bring quality theatre to the Downtown Mall, and find out ways (big or small) you could help out!

That’s good to know Esther. The only thing I find amusing at Live Arts is the audience it draws. I feel like I’ll be the only person below 35! :(

    /Can I volunteer for a part?

It’s fun to volunteer at Live Arts. They let you paint sets and wield power tools then buy you piza. And everyone that works there is very cool and talented.

Pinkie - I’m also a big fan of the free pizza for helping out with sets (and using power tools!)

I can tell you for a fact you won’t be the only volunteer below 35! I’m still a ways away from being 35 and I find volunteers close to my age on a regular basis. I hope your past experience of feeling too young won’t keep you away. It could be at this Volunteer Open House you’ll see more volunteer-types than you have in the past and may find that there are a variety of ages represented in the Live Arts volunteer pool. You can audition for any part in a play, and you can volunteer for anything backstage!

Now, for play audiences, they traditionally follow certain patterns … even in when I was in college and an intern in Williamstown, Mass., certain performance times drew an older crowd and other performance times drew a younger crowd. Here, I find that the earlier shows - 7:30pm and 2pm - draw older crowds. I find that the Pay What You Can shows (traditionally on Wednesdays) and Friday nights draw younger crowds.

I actually love the fact that there are a variety of ages at any point, which is so different from my college experience. When I worked on Noises Off, the Assistant Stage Manager was a high school student and the Stage Manager was fresh out of grad school. In Our Lady of 121st Street, the cast included everything from college-age to graduate students to working professionals and an expecting mother. I’ve also worked with really young actors - from elementary school up through high school - in some of the plays, and I’m amazed at how much talent comes from the surrounding schools and counties.

Another thing - if you go see Disney’s High School Musical when it’s performed later this summer - you will definitely not be the only audience member under 35.

Does any of that address your concern? My voice has always been respected at Live Arts, no matter my age, so I guess that’s another reason why I love to volunteer there.

I can totally back Esther Bunny up on this one. I’ve been volunteering on both sides of the stage now for five or six years and have always felt welcome and appreciated. And I’m definitely not 35 yet, at least not for at least another decade or so. Also, during some starving artist periods of my life, that pizza was definitely a lifesaver! :)
