The Return of Devon Sproule

After touring through parts of Europe followed by a swing through the West Coast earlier this year, Devon Sproule returns at long last to one of Charlottesville’s stages this week with a performance on Wednesday, May 21 at the Gravity Lounge

Devon Sproule

Joined by special guest and opening act Browning Porter this promises to be a special evening of music and story that should make everyone smile, laugh, and sing.  We hope you guys can make it out to welcome Devon back home to the “Old Virginia Block”.  Show time is at 7:30pm on Wednesday.  The cost at the door is $10.

Check out Devon’s live performance of “Old Virginia Block” at the legendary Station Inn in Nashville, Tennessee after the break.

[By the way:  If you ever find yourself in Nashville, a visit to the Station Inn is a must!  I’d put The Station Inn on par with the Ryman Auditorium in terms of the musical history its four walls hold.  And if you do go, make sure it’s to see a live performance offered up from the Station’s slightly raised-from-the-floor stage]

i missed the show but i got reports that it was well intended and great fun.
the highlight of the night being when ms. sproule belched like a trucker right before starting a song.
she had to ask the audience to stop laughing so she could start over.
only devon could pull off something like that with grace and comedic relief!
ps: heard browning’s set was wonderful too

Not a music writer, but I’ll try my best. The show was awesome! There was some unknown dude opening (Browning Porter) and I was hoping he wouldn’t play too long because I was really excited about seeing Devon but then it turned out he just read this funny story he wrote about something that happened to him during his childhood while Paul Curreri accompanied on his guitar.. It was entrancing and made me remember what it was like to be a kid again.
Then Devon, who sat in the audience with us when Browning read, jumped up and started playing a couple of songs by herself. She ended her acoustic set with “Come Comet or Dove”, which is so beautiful, it always makes a lump in my throat. Her voice is great on that song too, she’s singing all softly and sweetly, then it builds up and is kind of angry then goes back down to soft again and the song ends with her guitar playing fading out.
Then Jeff Romano, Paul, et al jumped on stage with her and she played some up her newer stuff. I can’t remember all the songs, I was drinking some of GL’s delicious Viognier, but “Old Virginia Block” is a fave and made me wanna get up and dance but everybody was sitting down, just bobbing their heads and tapping thier toes. The burp was pretty funny and we all giggled like little kids but she just grinned and asked us to stop laughing so she could stop laughing and continue.
It’s kind of a blur after that but that’s because of all the wine and the cozy venue and because listening to her play is like being on a porch swing on a warm summer night in the country. Does anyone remember what she ended with?
