A Farewell to the Satellite Ballroom

Satellite Ballroom

It’s sobering in some ways to talk about welcoming a Charlottesville musician back home to a local stage in one breath (Devon Sproule) only to realize in the next breath that we also must highlight the closing of a local stage that has provided a home of sorts to so many Charlottesville musicians.  But such is the case, as we acknowledge that this appears to be the final week for live shows at Satellite Ballroom before it closes its doors at the end of the month.

It seems fitting however that the Satellite would focus the attention of its final four shows on highlighting the talents of so many local artists beginning Wednesday, May 21 and concluding on Saturday, May 24.

Throughout the week I’m hoping to highlight a few of the artists scheduled to perform at these final shows including videos by The Beetnix, The Nice Jenkins, and The Acoustic Groove Trio, two “Seven Questions From the MUSE” segments with Shannon Worrell and Jon Bray of Truman Sparks, and we will begin our farewell to Satellite Ballroom by asking you this simple question:

.

Of all the shows you’ve seen at the Satellite Ballroom over the past couple years what two or three shows stand out as being your most memorable?  Share your concert favorites with us.

I have to admit that during the first year or so that I lived here in Charlottesville I spent most of my time going between shows at Starr Hill, the Gravity Lounge, and during the summer months, the Charlottesville Pavilion.  It wasn’t until late in the game, and in particular following the closure of Starr Hill, that I began to branch out and see shows at Satellite.  The list of artists that I’ve seen will, without a doubt, pale in comparison to the lists of others.  But a short rundown of highlights include:

M.Ward, The Sadies, Richard Buckner, The Handsome Furs, my introduction to The Cinnamon Band, King Wilkie, The Wrinkle Neck Mules, Jim Waive and the Young Divorcees, (The All New) Acorn Sisters, my live introduction to Shannon Worrell, and even though it wasn’t the best Avett Brothers show I’ve ever seen, the crowd that came out to see those guys is one of the most impressive I’ve seen in Charlottesville in the short time that I’ve been here.

You can find a complete rundown of the final four live shows at the Satellite Ballroom listed below in our Charlottesville Events section, which can be found along the right side of this page.

Below is a live performance from the Handsome Furs recorded live at the Satellite Ballroom from April of this year.
