Holy Busy Friday Batman!

Peter Case--photo by Greg AllenI pulled out an old Peter Case album just to refresh my memory.  Case is a fantastic songwriter who is highly respected in some circles, but remains virtually unknown in others.  I’ve got Flying Saucer Blues in the CD player right now.  If you’re so inclined, check out track 2:  “Cool Drink O’ Water”, track 4:  “Walking Home Late.”, and track 11:  “This Could Be The One”.  I’m sure you can find a preview somewhere on the interweb.

Or you could check him out in person, as Peter Case stops by the Gravity Lounge tonight.  Case’s most recent album Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John received a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Folk Album.  The talented Nathan Moore from over in Staunton, VA opens.  Show time is 7:30pm.  Cost is $15.

And that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg…

Punch Brothers

The Punch Brothers take the stage at Satellite Ballroom at long last.  Originally scheduled for April 11 but cancelled due to a family emergency, the highly innovative acoustic five-piece led by former Nickel Creek mandolinist Chris Thile hit Charlottesville Friday, May 16.  If you’re looking for a taste of what you can expect, check out our Song of the Day feature from March 31 as the Punch Brothers pull off an amazing cover of Radiohead’s “Morning Bell”.  You can find that video performance here.  Doors at the Satellite open at 8pm.  Cost is $20.

The final noteworthy concert takes place tonight at The Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar as The High Street Lowlifes and Brownbird Rudy Relic open for local gyspy klezmer punks The Accordion Death Squad.  Show time is 9pm and the cost is only $5.  Before they were Accordion Death Squad they were known as The Moonshine Street Choir.  Below is an early taste of the Death Squad sound.

At work right now, we’re playing a little game called, “IM all your coworkers the lyrics to the most annoying songs they don’t want stuck in their head while at work”. “Mmmbop” is the clear frontrunner with “Hollaback Girl” getting me cussed out by a friend in IT. B-A-N-A-N-A-S!
