Ambiguous Animation Painted on Public Walls

I wanted to share one of the coolest pieces of art I’ve seen recently. The artist who refers to himself as “Blu” paints on public spaces in Argentina and then uses stop action photography to animate his art. It is truly amazing stuff and very original. Blu maintains a very interesting blog that you should read if you want deeper insights into the work. Can we please get Blu to come to Charlottesville?! I would love it. Would you?

I saw this recently and loved it, too. I dunno, though, if something like this would ever work on the pristine (for the most part) walls in the ‘ville– something about the surrounding grittiness & graffiti makes it work so well– makes it seem even more alive & spontaneous– while if that happened on Jefferson’s virgin brick, it would only end up looking like a grant-funded high-fallutin’ art project. (you know what I mean?)

Not, of course, to insult high-fallutin’-ness, or money for the arts, both of which are still excellent things in and of themselves.
