The cvilleMUSE Mix Tape

Mix TapeSo I got this crazy idea.  You guys may not like this at all.  Or you may really dig it.  In many ways cvilleMUSE is an experiment…an experiment in connectivity and expression on art and place.  So let’s see how well we connect the dots.

I think we should make a mix tape.  The first cvilleMUSE mix tape.

Here’s how it works.  I’ll begin the mix tape with a song, which I’ll post in video form after the break.  Then it’s your job to chose Song #2.  First one in, gets the next song.  But here’s the catch.  You have to tell us why the song you chose should follow the song before it.  And we need a video for the song because it’s really the only way the casual reader can follow along.  Just add the URL to your comment so that I can embed it on the post.

Then we move on to Song #3.  Same thing.  First one in, why you chose the song, and a video URL.  Then Song #4, Song #5, etc.  This first mix we’ll use as a test run.  So only 10 songs total.  At the end, we’ll have a page of songs with videos on a single post.  Our first mix tape.  Who wants to play?  I’ll start…

.

Seven Muses so let’s see if we can’t get seven mix tapes by year’s end (that is if this works).  Every mix tape needs a title.  We’ll name this one after Euterpe:

THE MUSE OF MUSIC

1.  Porpoise Song (The Theme from HEAD) by The Monkees (Shaun)

Purpoise Song by The Monkees

2.  Hello Goodbye by the Beatles (Dolly)

Hello Goodbye by The Beatles

3.  Nothing from Nothing by Billy Preston (Newman)

Nothing from Nothing by Billy Preston

4.  I Want You Back by The Jackson Five (Kyle)

I Want You Back by The Jackson Five

5.  Hell is Chrome by Wilco (Justin)

Hell is Chrome by Wilco

6.  Lost Cause by Beck (lividlunch)

Lost Cause by Beck

7.  Burn One Down by Ben Harper (PJP)

Burn One Down by Ben Harper

8. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend (pinkie)

A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

9.  Stella by Starlight by The Kevin Hays Trio (byard)

Stella By Starlight by The Kevin Hays Trio

10.  Concrete Jungle by Bob Marley (five)

Concrete Jungle by Bob Marley

The Deluxe Edition of Our Mix Tape Comes With Two Bonus Tracks:

Bonus 1:  Challengers by the New Pornographers (justin)

Challengers by The New Pornographers

Bonus 2:  Girl in the War by Josh Ritter (Shaun)

Girl in the War by Josh Ritter

That’s our first mix tape everyone.

What’s the thought on this idea of mine?  Too complicated?  Worth a try?  Lame?  Brilliant?  If it fails we tried, if it works…Bonus!

That song/video did nothing but disturb me. How much did it cost to rent those mermaids? I remember reading about those attractions that were so popular with the hidden air hose while girls in fish tales did tricks.

That said, I like the idea, Shaun, and I’ll be thinking of my choice for next track. I have an idea, but I’ll keep ruminating.

    Perhaps cheesy and obvious- but

    1) because the droning on and on of goodbye led my brain to this.
    2) The Monkees tend to sound like Sgt Pepper’s era Beatles.
    3) It’s of a time

You’ve got it right Dolly. All I needed was the URL so that I can embed the video. We now have song #2. Hello Goodbye by The Beatles. Who’s got song #3? Remember when you chose, tell us it why you picked it to follow the Beatles and add the URL for the video to your response.

Nothing follows the Beattles but another Beattle. And he does rock the awesomest afro ever!

Very nice so far. This might work. The anticipation for #5 is killing me. Who knows what might pop up next.

    Wilco “Hell is Chrome:” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QkV-AoF2cI

Sorry it had to be a cheesy video. Keeps up roughly the same vibe as the last to but could be a segue into either new music or more sedate music.

Nice choice Justin! We’re halfway there. Song #5 is in…Wilco’s Hell is Chrome. Numero seis?

I realize I am new to this but I was going to put my input in. I feel like the mix tape is getting on the sad theme, so I am going to pick it up with some Ben Harper. So Burn One Down is my recommedation, why, becasue it’s friday and….

Not fair. I want “Spoken Word” by Sarah White on the mix. But she doesn’t have a video for that.

  20. 16 May 2008 at 12:46 pmShaun Harvey said:

Spoken word will have its day Pinkie. Unfortunately we gotta have the video. But your shout out for Sarah White has been noted for the record. :)

in a way it’s sorta like the old days of making a mix tape…sometimes you knew what the perfect next song should be, but if you didn’t have the album, you had to find choice #2.

  21. 16 May 2008 at 12:58 pmPinkie said:

Well, then we’ve got up the tempo a little, how about A-Punk by Vampire Weekend?

I don’t know if we can do Jazz. But here is one of my all time favorite you tube clips of jazz. It looks like a camera phone and sounds like it too, but its been posted by Kevin Hays himself:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKMbG9wkTgc

The band is Bill Stewart on drums, Larry Grenadier on bass (and Seamus Blake on alto sax but does not appear in the clip) and its a reworking of Stella By Starlight by the Sangha Quartett.

you’re in byard at #9. next person in is the last person on the mix tape boat. how should we end our first mix tape?

  26. 16 May 2008 at 1:44 pmShaun Harvey said:

alright, so this is almost finished. i was curious how this would all work. it’s really not too bad from my end. we definitely have a wide array of bases covered. i dig it.

now i think next time let’s see if we can find that song that seems to fit with the one it follows. if you think about a great mix tape, in the end it says something or has a feeling or groove to it. i think that would be a cool thing to capture from a bunch of different people in a bunch of different places. any thoughts on our first mix tape?

thanks to everyone who throw in their songs…this was a blast to watch and listen to as it climbed and morphed. #10 you’re last but not least.

btw byard, i’ll correct the title of the track in a few.

  28. 16 May 2008 at 1:57 pmShaun Harvey said:

it will be. we won’t do it too often to where it gets old, but it will re-appear for sure. as i look at it and listen to it….it’s perfect!

as for no videos, we’ll eventually get there as well…i think someone else suggested muxtape in another post a couple weeks ago…i like the mux. i also kinda like the video method, maybe i’m old school but that’s what made the mix tape so cool…it was a small pain in the ass to make in the first place. :)

if you guys haven’t checked out muxtape…it’s pretty cool site.

for a second there Dan i thought you were finishing up the mix. just one more song to go.

@36. Your suggestions have been cataloged for future use. If anyone else has any suggestions for future mix tape themes, drop them off here. I’ve got a few MUSE themes of my own for somewhere down the road. i didn’t go with a theme for this one, because it’s a test drive of sorts and the idea still has that new car smell.

and oh yeah…IF YOU HAVEN’T ADDED A SONG TO OUR LITTLE MIX, PLEASE DO SO. WE’RE STILL ONE SONG SHORT OF FINISHING THIS ONE OFF. (don’t forget to add you video link too)

    thank you :)

Apologies to all for getting a late start to the day but it is a Monday and it is most beautiful. Posts coming in a few, I’m just having a hard time staying out of the sunshine. Keep the mix tape suggestions coming. This has been a really cool experiment and that is an experiment no more. More mix tapes to come for sure!

  40. 19 May 2008 at 4:37 pmShaun Harvey said:

we’re gonna finish this mix tape off soon. If there’s no final song by the end of the day (Monday, 05/19) from a yet to contribute reader then we’ll just have to call this one “The 9 out of 10 People” Mix. And then get ready for the next one. So if you’ve got Song #10 for The Muse of Music, let us hear it and see it.
