In Town Sound: Frank Vignola at Gravity Lounge
.
Here’s one for fans of jazz, acoustic music, and masterful guitar playing as the Gravity Lounge welcomes The Frank Vignola Quintet to Charlottesville on Thursday, May 15.
Frank Vignola, who also happens to be the guitarist for the David Grisman Quintet, has received rave reviews from audiences, peers, and critics alike. Guitar legend Les Paul named Vignola as one of his Five Most Admired Guitarists” and Modern Guitars Magazine had this to say:
.
“Vignola lives in a music world without boundaries. He and his group dial into …music from all over the planet and wrestle, cajole, and seduce it into a harmonious and sometimes quirky melting pot.”
Show time is at 7:30pm this evening and admission price is $20. For more on the Frank Vignola Quintet and for a taste of the band’s sound….

Luke by The Frank Vignola Quintet (w/ Casey Driessen on fiddle)
The Frank Vignola Quintet, in addition to Vignola on guitar, features the phenomenal mandolinist Josh Pinkham as well as Vinny Raniolo on guitar, Rick Zukor on percussion, and Pete Coco on bass. Drawing on a wide range of influences ranging from Eric Clapton to Django Reinhardt to Thelonious Monk, Vignola and his band blend gypsy jazz, swing, bluegrass, and contemporary rock to create a sound that is both innovative and highly entertaining. I can’t imagine that you’ll walk away disappointed.

BTW–If you wanted to make it a complete night of jazz on the town you could head from Gravity to Miller’s and catch John D’Earth. The weekly D’Earth performance is sometimes advertised as no cover but I’ve had to shell out a few bucks on the nights I’ve attended (which is well worth it). So Vignola is $20, let’s say D’Earth is maybe $3. So that’s over 5 hours of music for under $25. Doesn’t seem like a bad deal. Of course drinks not included.
Or see the Granville Mullings Project for free at Enoteca. Enjoy Wine and Panini and a first class Jazz live band. Like John D’Earth they are playing every Thursday (but somehow don’t make it into the calendar on the right) but unlike John D’Earth they are brand new to the scene!
Anyhow, who is Frank Vignola playing with? Who is in the band?
The band is listed after the video. The only performer not a part of the band is Casey Driessen on the fiddle/violin. And Casey is one of my go to guys on the fiddle. I reviewed his album 3D for AmericanaRoots.com which you can find here.
BTW byard…you should drop Space Rambler a line at spacerambler@spicybear.com. He’s maintaining the calendar and would be more than happy to add your listing to the calendar.
And folks, you heard it here. Go see Granville Mullings Project at enoteca tonight. Thursday nights are jazz nights in Cville!
yes, Frank is awesome! I will miss Casey’s fiddlin’, he’s awesome, I saw that video… I know Frank’s playin’ in Roanoke tomorrow and I think Morwenna Lasko’s opening, maybe she’ll take Casey’s place!
