Weekend Reminders: Sponsored by the Letter “S”

S is for Shaun.  That’s my name, so don’t wear it out.  S is also for Surrender, as this week I surrender to Lu Sid over at cVillain for beating me to the Weekend Reminder punch.  I am waving my white flag in your honor as I type.  Nice work.  You can find a rundown of the weekend goodies here:  cVillain’s Weekend Preview.

And S is of course is for that that wonderful little television avenue where we all learned our ABC’s and the joys of counting to 12, Sesame Street.  So far all you kids at heart we thought we’d let you know that Sesame Street is coming to Charlottesville this weekend. For all the details on Sesame Street as well as a few highlights on this weekend’s happenings:

Friday, May 9

  • Two shows for the price of none.  Trees on Fire and Need to Breathe at the Charlottesville Pavilion for Friday After Five.  Looks like the sun may break out later today, so get out there and enjoy it while you can.  Free.  Gates open at 5:30pm.

  • One of Austin’s finest singer/songwriters, Slaid Cleaves, is at the Gravity Lounge on Friday.  I’ve seen Slaid four times to date, the last being at 214 Community Arts Center (formerly the Prism Coffeehouse) last year and he is always splendid.  Charles Arthur opens.  8pm.  $20.  Following the Slaid Cleaves performance Brad Savage of 106.1FM The Corner will be putting on an eighties dance party at Gravity beginning at 10:30pm.  Dance Party is free.

  • Rock Out! Dine Out!.  More than just a call to action, Rock Out, Dine Out is a very special benefit for Charlottesville’s Music Resource Center.  The benefit begins at 5:30pm on Friday at the Center.  For more info, check out our Rock Out, Dine Out post from Wednesday of this week by clicking here.

  • Get into the groove with Toubab Krewe Friday at Satellite Ballroom.  This five piece from Asheville, NC mixes African sounds (in particular those of Mali) with American music styles to create an instrumental beat that has been featured at some of America’s biggest music festivals including Bonnaroo, Merlefest, and others.  Charlottesville’s own instrumental wonders, Morwenna Lasko and Jay Pun open.  Doors at 9pm.  $12 at the door.

  • Doc Watson.  Do I really need to say more?  If you look up the term “living legend” I’ll guarantee you find a picture of Doc Watson next to it.  Be looking for a post tomorrow on cvilleMUSE, further highlighting Mr. Watson.  Doc Watson Hills of Home with David Holt and grandson, Richard Watson is Saturday at 8pm at the Paramount Theater.  Tickets are still available.  $38.50 - $49.50.
