My Morning Jacket Added to Pavilion Line-Up

We’ve learned that the Charlottesville Pavilion is set to officially announce that My Morning Jacket has been added to their concert line-up this summer!  Now that the venue is on the verge of announcing the show, we can tell you that the Jim James and the boys will be coming to town on Tuesday, September 2.  Tickets go on sale Friday, May 16.  This promises to be one unbelievable show!!!

My Morning Jacket

As I mentioned in our initial announcement post last night, you can catch My Morning Jacket this weekend as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live.  The band will be releasing their forthcoming album Evil Urges on June 10 on ATO Records.

As it stands now, my Summer Wish List is getting smaller by the day:

My Morning Jacket
Andrew Bird
Modest Mouse
Drive By Truckers
Los Lobos
The Avett Brothers

2 down, 4 to go.

Thanks again to all the members of the My Morning Jacket Lobbying Committee.  And who said subliminal messages don’t work?  Here’s to a job well done!

Dude, what are you, president of their fan club? You get waaaay too excited over two hours of overpriced music that everyone around you will ruin by talking over.

i have a feeling they’d have to talk pretty loud to talk over MMJ. actually i’m just the secretary of the fan club. we all wear funny jackets in the early hours while drinking our coffee.

doof, there’s no reason to be cynical about it, especially since you don’t sound like you’ll be attending. personally i don’t understand the hype about my morning jacket, but maybe i’ll get it eventually. the pavilion still doesn’t appeal to me, but i think it’s nice that acts like this are coming through town.

Here’s my impersonation of myself at the MMJ show at Starr Hill:

    1. Dr. Dog sure does suck a lot
    2. First hour of MMJ: Wow, this band is pretty great! And all that hair!
3: Second hour of MMJ: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz………
    4. Post-show: I really should’ve left after the first hour.

And Shaun, howzabout trying to lobby to get some bands that haven’t already played C’ville to come this summer? What’s the point of having these venues if we just keep getting the same acts here over and over again?
Nothing against Andrew Bird, but there’s no way he can be that much fun outside - his music is way too intimate (I saw him in DC a couple of years ago). I’m not a big Arcade Fire fan, but they would be much more appropriate for the Pavilion. As would The Raconteurs or Gnarls Barkley or Spoon. Just for giggles, why not see if you can get Daft Punk to play here? I’d rather see them than just about anyone else around right now.

    Raconteurs now there’s a suggestion. I like it. :)

/In regards to andrew bird…much more suited as an opener i would say…say something like a 3-band deal…andrew bird/calexico/levon helm and ramble on the road (something that would be a total potpourri of sounds)

I third the Raconteurs ! Wouldn’t it be nice if that’s all we had to do?????

I don’t know about you guys, but I like to see bands that make me jump up and down and sing along while rocking some devil horns. I wish we could get Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Rise Against, Panic at the Disco, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, etc. All we get is hippie/bluegrass/jam band/country stuff.

Have you ever been to a Kenny Rogers show??? Pinkie it’s off the hook crazy! ;)

I do think your list could have been more adventurous Shaun!

Very safe choices (but good ones).

Unfortunately, there’s one or two bands on the list that probably aren’t going to happen thanks to skeptics at the Pavilion, but MMJ and Modest Mouse more than make up for it and said bands are playing plenty of shows in the region, so it just means traveling.

I think Andrew Bird headlining would be a tough sell in Cville - I saw him in Richmond at Toad’s Place and it wasn’t a sell out by any means. However, I love your Calexico suggestion and imagine that show at the Paramount!

Some great suggestions by baconfat - Raconteurs or Gnarls Barkley or Spoon - would all be god Pavilion shows.

    @10: Ew. Kenny Rogers sucks.
@11: I saw Gnarls Barkley at JPJ and it. was. boring. Blegh. Cee-Lo just stood there. And there are only like two good songs.

@baconfat: dr. dog in my opinion is a lot better than what i’ve heard of my morning jacket (i won’t glorify them with a shortening of their name). but you’re certainly right about andrew bird.

@13 - Gnarls Barkley would work much better as a Pavilion show than it did as a JPJ show. Gnarls Barkley has no business playing JPJ. Regardless of whether they can sell that many tickets or not.

Andrew Bird at the Paramount, not the Pavilion. The Pavilion would suck for an Andrew Bird show. I’m guessing a large part of the Pavilion crowd would tune out the first time he broke into a whistle.

MMJ was an acquired taste for me, but now I really like them. I saw them open for Pearl jam at a big arena and they were still good, so they should have no problem kicking serious ass at the Pavilion.
