Friday, May 2

  • Van Halen fans can finally “jump” for joy.  After two cancelled shows, the band finally appears to be ready to take the JPJ stage.  Van Halen with opener Ryan Shaw, Friday at John Paul Jones Arena.  Tickets are still available.  $49.50 -$149.50!  (888) JPJ-TIXS.
  • Both the Eli Cook Band and Jim Waive and the Young Divorcees perform live seperate shows in town on Friday.  For the details check out our feature “Live and Local:  Curreri, Cook, and Waive“.
  • Bob Dylan without the words.  Jewels and Binoculars perform instrumental versions of Dylan songs.  Friday at Gravity Lounge.  7:30pm.  $10.  This will be followed by a late show at 10pm featuring Tim Be Told and In Technicolor.  $5 for the late show.
  • Kings of Belmont head west of town as they invade Uncle Charlie’s in Crozet.  9:30pm.  $5.

Saturday, May 3

  • John D’Earth steps out of his familiar setting at Miller’s and heads over to Fellini’s for an evening of jazz.  Saturday at 10pm.  $3.
  • The sights and sounds a bridge can create.  NanoHz No. 12 described as “an evening of organic electronic sound, video, light, improvisations, and food” with Pinko Communists, Chia Chi Charlie Chang (you gotta love alliteration!), Caustic Castle, Clifford Schwing, Conner Lacy, and DJ Kook.  Saturday at 7pm at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative.  $5 suggested donation.
  • Richmond’s RPG is joined by Horsefang and Dead Goats for an evening of rock, metal, and punk at Outback Lodge.  Saturday at 9pm.  $6.
  • Local indie rockers Quiet, My Dear are joined once again by the Clarence Thomas Action-Adventure Unit at Miller’s on Saturday.  10:30pm.  No cover.

Sunday, May 4

  • Ryan Shaw, who opens for Van Halen on Friday will be performing a second show in town on Sunday as 106.1 The Corner presents Ryan at Outback Lodge.  I couldn’t find a show time.  $10.  For more info give the Outback a buzz.  979.7211.

  • Moms, this one is for you!  Spring Fest:  A Mothers Day Music Festival is Sunday from noon - 6pm at Tandem Friends School.  Scheduled to perform are Trees on Fire, Greg Ward Project (Greg’s an old friend!), Rogan Brothers, Pixy Led and more.  $10 adults, $5 students, Moms get in free!

  • The delightful duo that is Birdlips are at Gravity Lounge Sunday at 7:30pm.  The Mason Brothers open.  $8.

  • Finally, LiveArts presents their latest stage production A Comic Ballad of Misfortune Friday and Saturday at 8pm.  Sunday at 2pm.  $8 - $10.  Ages 15 and under “pay what you can” for all three performances.

    Gaaaah! So many great events are happening this weekend!!! I’ve been invited to so many parties here and in the country that I don’t know what to do. In spite of some recent frustrations, I really do love this town.
