Concert Lost and Found

Coachella's Flying Pig

Imagine seeing this Lost Pet Announcement tacked to your neighborhood lamp post:

LOST:  One Giant Pig.  Over 20 feet tall and at least two school buses wide.  Has the words “Don’t be led to slaughter” written on one side and “Fear builds walls” on the other.  Also has the word “Obama” next to a checked ballot box written on its belly.  Was last seen floating away from rock festival.  Reward is $10,000.

What’s really crazy is that earlier this week this announcement was very real.

.

On Sunday evening during Roger Waters’ performance at the Coachella music festival in Indio, California, a giant helium-filled pig was led off stage by lines held from the ground as Waters performed the song “Pigs” from the Pink Floyd album Animals.  Shortly thereafter things went awry as the pig came loose from its tethers and simply floated away into the desert sky.  Later that night concert organizers offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who could locate their lost pig.

Then on Tuesday two couples found large heaps of plastic carcass in their front yards about two miles from the festival site.  After calling authorities, who then came and examined the plastic pieces, it was determined that the wayward pig had been found.  The two couples split the reward money.  The whole story sort of gives new meaning to the expression “When pigs fly”.

So with the story of our lost and found pig in mind, I got to thinking:

What’s the best/worst, strangest/coolest, or most interesting thing you’ve lost or found while attending a concert or music festival?

I found a ticket on the ground one time. What really got my attention was the $50 paperclipped to it. I held it up in the air and yelled “did anyone lose this ticket and $50?” about 5 times. Oddly, no one came of to claim it, so I kept it. I gave the ticket to some lucky guy standing outside with his finger in the air. And I spent the money on beers for my friends. Karma ain’t got nothin’ on me.

I was in NYC back in December of 1998, staying w/friends in Hoboken with a ticket to see Phish at MSG on New Year’s Eve. Two days before the show I went into the city for the very first time by myself. I ended up spending the day walking around the Village, stopping in bars, bookstores, and record shops. I ended up buying five or six vinyl records. As evening came on I decided, what the hell, Phish is in town, I’ve got some cash, maybe I’ll see if I can find a ticket and go.

So I headed up to mid-town and did the whole “I need 1″ routine in front of MSG. After about 10 minutes, a guy walked up and asked me if I needed a ticket. I nodded and he said $35. I gave the guy the cash, he gave me the ticket, and away I went. I walked through the first door by just showing my ticket. At the second door I had to hand the ticket over to be torn. As soon as I handed it to the guy…he looked at me and said. I’m sorry sir, your ticket is a fake, and he pointed to a side exit. I was bummed. I’d just LOST $35. I headed back out into the NYC night, it had started raining, and I began to head to the bus depot to catch a ride back to Hoboken. But a wild hair caught me and I said screw it, I’ll give it one more shot.

So this time I just stood in the rain, with my records under my coat, and just held up one finger in front of me. After about 15 minutes a guy walked up and said why so sad my friend. I told him my story, he looked at me, and then asked what I had under my coat. I showed him my records which he really dug and then he said C’mon I’ve got your ticket. Turns out a friend of his got snowed in at the airport in Detroit and couldn’t make the show. So he had an extra ticket, which he gave me!!, we went inside, sat down, he bought me gin and tonics all night long, we saw a great show, and I never saw him ever again. That’s what I FOUND.
