It is springtime. As the weather gets warmer I get more anxious, having been cooped up inside in front of a computer all day - only to come home and put myself right back in front of it writing or coding or gaming. I don’t feel too bad about it - after all every five days there is a weekend. I love listening to records with the windows open. I love being single. I love spending a saturday afternoon sitting on the couch and getting up every half hour to change the side.
More often than not my affections turn to a special young lady and I will be inspired to make her a mix CD.
This happens pretty soon after becoming enamoured with her - maybe it’s the first time we meet - maybe it takes a while. Chances are if I like a girl I’m already thinking about what songs make me feel good when I think about her. I’m closing my eyes and hearing the banging hum of the first chords to The Sprawl by Sonic Youth or The Replacements’ Alex Chilton. Or if she’s a special lady NY State of Mind by Nas. That one is sort of a stretch though, and she’s gotta kind of ‘get me’ to appreciate the awesomeness of that song rather than just passing it off as rap.
Fortunately I’m smoking hot (pff) and have a decent record collection. Unfortunately I am an awkward guy, so making a mix for her is a way for me to open up a little more. She shouldn’t be offended that I’ve made mixes in the past, cause I haven’t ever knowingly put the same song on any of them. Hopefully she reads into it just enough - but it’s a challenge not putting songs on there too intense or too heady right off the bat. You don’t tell a girl you love her on the second date, after all. At least not very often.
Oh well. I hope you make a killer mix for your heartthrob - whether it be girl, boy, internet lover, etc. This is the time of year to do it. The three songs above are my songs to you, Charlottesville. I fall in love with you a little every spring. Be good to me and I’ll be good to you.
