It appears that the news is official. The Cavalier Daily reports today that Plan 9 Music will not be renewing its lease on its retail space in the Anderson Brothers Building on UVA’s Corner. Plan 9’s lease is set to expire at the end of May.
As a result, the three subtenants on Plan 9’s lease, which includes the Satellite Ballroom, Just Curry, and Higher Grounds Coffee will now be forced to shut down their operations in the building as well. The move clears the way for what appears to be a new CVS location in the Anderson Brothers Building.
It is a sad day indeed for the Charlottesville music scene. Thanks to each and everyone involved with both the Satellite Ballroom and Plan 9 Music’s Corner location for all the great tunes! I’m sure we haven’t heard the last from many of you.

That’s very sad. Plan 9 is a good place to meet but my problem is Just Curry. They have a lot of good food and feel like they’ve been blind sided by the whole deal. CVS should let them keep the space. I’m sure the store’s employees will appreciate the food and the great soups.
Lame lame lameness. I can’t believe this is happening.
@five. I’m assuming you’re aware that Just Curry has a second location? Just wondering if you knew. It’s in the new Transit Center on the Downtown Mall. As for Plan 9, record stores in general are having a tough time of it. Consolidating with their sister store at Albemarle Square is probably beneficial for them. I’ll be curious to see if Satellite doesn’t return somewhere, in some form. I can’t imagine that Danny Shea won’t be involved in some music venture here in town.
@pinkie. lame is putting it mildly.
Wow, I didn’t realize Just Curry served soup…
Who gives a crap about Just Curry leaving…there’s another one. End of story.
The bigger issue is that Charlottesville, a town that has been a musical Mecca for so long, is now void of a medium-sized concert venue if Satellite Ballroom closes and The Jefferson renovation remains incomplete. Summer concert season is starting up, so the Pavilion will handle large acts, but the bands that packed Starr Hill and might have squeezed into the Ballroom have no where to go but Richmond where the gorgeous Toad’s Place and the beautiful, newly opened National Theater stand waiting.
I can’t believe it. The music scene here has always been rich and even overwhelming at times. Seems to me that our friends over in Richmond might be feeling that way these days.
And just wait until we get a taste of the blandness the “machine” will undoubtedly prop up at The Jefferson.
All hail the lowest common denominator! Christ.
This is pathetic! Like we need another CVS! Way to go Charlottesville for letting such corporate entities invade this area- shame on you!
