Another late announcement I know, but if you happen to be checking in on a Sunday afternoon, there’s still time to head down to Gravity Lounge for a fantastic triple-bill of Americana as the Gravity hosts Thad Cockrell, Morwenna Lasko and Jay Pun, and Robinella. Show starts at 7pm Sunday. Cost is $15. Check out their linked sites for more on each performer. See you there!

Shaun… buddy? I’m now back. Computer problems in the last couple weeks have disabled my mobility over the interweb. As for the pictures on this post, very nice. Sadly I work on Sunday nights, so will have to wait until later in the summer to enjoy my Sundays.
I see you’re keeping up with the great work. I’m glad that you’re the captain of this boat.
five ol pal…nice to see you back on ship. thanks as always for the words…here’s hoping the wind continues to fill our sails
Another fantastic show at the Gravity Lounge! Jay Pun/Morwenna Lasko, Thad Cockrell/Julie Lee/Robinella
Jay Pun leaves no part of his guitar untouched and Morwenna Lasko is one of the most accomplished young violin players I’ve ever seen! Together the two lit up the stage and the crowd. For fans of their music, they are working on a new album, and if you can be a little patient it should be coming up relatively soon.
Before I continue though, I do have one rather large bone to pick. Lasko and Pun opened the show and the Gravity was full. There was still a few available seats but not many. During their whole performance the crowd sat quietly and literally hung on every note. My gripe rises from what happened after their performance. The evening’s second performer was an unannounced singer-songwriter (at least by the venue, but we had the scoop) by the name of Thad Cockrell. Thad is an amazing songwriter. His debut record “Warmth and Beauty” is an overlooked fantastic Americana record. He’s also recorded an album of duets with Caitlin Cary of Whiskeytown fame entitled “Begonias“, which is equally fantastic. If haivng Thad on stage wasn’t enough, he was joined by another great songwriter by the name of Julie Lee. Check out her fantastic acoustic/country-bluegrass album “Stillhouse Road“. As they say in “O Brother Where Art Thou”…it’s a keeper. Thad and Julie were essentially thrown into the “between sets” performance slot.
The problem was you could barely hear them! Not because the sound was bad, but because everyone who came to see Lasko and Pun, got out of their seats, went to the bar area, and ended up talking, laughing, and making so much noise that they essentially drowned out the two performers on stage. I hate to say this people, but some of us came to see more than Lasko and Pun and we would have appreciated it you have given the same consideration to the performers on stage as you did to the artists that you came to see. I did get a chance to talk to Thad and I definitely let him know how much I love his music. I wonder if others would have felt the same way had they been given a chance to actually hear him perform.
As for Robinella, as my S.O. described it, her voice is like liquid. She is jazz singer incarnate in a country girl package and it doesn’t hurt that she is a hell of a performer. She banters with the audience, she laughs, she jokes, she brings you into the show. She sang jazz standards with a country feel. She played Hank Williams’ “Am So Lonely I Could Cry” and ended up changing the lyrics on the spot to tell a humorous tale about her toes, which her boyfriend tells her look like Cheeto’s. She brought Morwenna Lasko on stage, got her to take off her boots, and rolled through a number of unrehearsed songs with Lasko that highlighted not only Morwenna’s talent, but also the talents of Robinella and her performing parner Taylor Coker on bass (who is in a word…amazing!) She played audience requests (”Down the Mountain” and “Silence of the Day”), personal favorites (”Dress Me Up/Dress Me Down” and “Mistakes”), and by the time she closed with a stunning version of “Georgia on My Mind”, she had the audience eating out of her hands.
A fantastic show all around I just hope that next time, those individuals in attendance take the time to listen to and respect the talents of all the performers on stage, not just the ones they came to see.
from what I heard, the addition of Thad’s performance was last minute and a favor someone hooked up as Thad was just passing through town. He was great and though it wasn’t the greatest spot for him to play, I think jp/morwenna/robinella’s fans still appreciated his music. I bought his cd! Robinella was indeed great and I was so happy to see morwenna playing with her too, I just wish robinella would have sung a bit with m&j! Who was “Calvin” that they kept asking for? Anyone know?
