The (All New) Acorn Sisters: In Their Own Words

All New Acorn Sisters

The (All New) Acorn Sisters sing country songs written by other people.  Actually they sing country songs written by other people quite well.  The sweet singing duo of Sarah White (aka Sugar) and Sian Richards (aka Cookie) have been performing in and around Charlottesville for a number of years now.  The songs they perform come from the deep well of country music, stretching back to the Carter Family all the way forward to the likes of Emmylou Harris.  And since they spend so much time on stage singing what others have written, I thought it would be cool if we gave them a chance to say a few things of their own.    So I sent them seven little questions and they, in turn, supplied the answers.  Who knew they that they cuss like sailors and like “Tight Fittin’ Jeans”?

.

MUSE:  Hey ladies it’s Shaun from over at cvilleMUSE.  I thought I’d throw a few questions at the two of you and see what kind of answers I get back. Thanks for hopefully playing along.

————

MUSE:  How did this little band begin?
SUGAR:  Let’s just say it all started a couple years ago when Cookie (nee Sian Richards) and I started singing at the Country Christmas show.  Then to keep it going we did some theme shows together: water songs at the Wunderkammer; autumn songs for a Harvest Moon show.  Next we might do shoes, all our favorite songs about shoes: Put My Little Shoes Away, Who’s Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Foot, Daddy’s Workin’ Boots, I Love You Darlin’ (But Oh Your Feet Smell), etc
COOKIE:  Sarah started organizing the Country Christmas show at the Tea House 4 yrs ago.  I was one of the many people she asked to sing along during her set.  It slowly evolved from that.

MUSE:  If God didn’t make Honky Tonk Angels then who did?
SUGAR:  Bob Martin
COOKIE:  I think Honky Tonk Angels are perfectly capable of making themselves.

MUSE:  What’s the best part of sharing the stage with the other sister?
SUGAR:  She looks just like me!
COOKIE:  It’s always fun.  Even if it seems like it isn’t gonna be a fun night, it usually is.  We think we’re hilarious!

MUSE:  Who is more likely to get into a bar fight:  Sugar or Cookie?
SUGAR:  Cookie.  She has bad potty mouth.  And I mean baaaaaad.
COOKIE:  I think a double-team is what you should be scared of, but Sugar would start it, fer sure.

MUSE:  Any thoughts of recording or writing songs together?
SUGAR:  Record yes.  Write no.  We are a cover band after all.
COOKIE:  We thought of recording a few things for fun and there are a couple people that would actually want a copy, I think.  We don’t have any plans to write stuff together.

MUSE:  The three country songs you wish you had written are?
SUGAR:  Behind Closed Doors, Tight Fittin’ Jeans, and The Man That Turned My Mama On
COOKIE:  Honestly, I don’t write songs so I never think about it.  I could see wishing I could write like someone.  I wonder what makes the old country songs so good.  All the songs from Europe, that came here and got passed around the mountains.  The same themes get used over and over, like theatre, they have stock characters, you would think they would get tired, but mostly, they don’t.

MUSE:  Finally, if you could sum up The (All New) Acorn Sisters in one word, what word would you use?
SUGAR:  Sweet!
COOKIE:  Overrated?  JUST kidding.  How bout genius?  Too much?  O.K.  I will go with…nice.

 ————

Nice and sweet.  That’s exactly what it sounds like from this side of the stage as well.  Thanks a million ladies and if I do run into you around town, I promise to be on my best behavior.  I wouldn’t want to start a fight or anything.

I am number one fan of the ANAS (bad acronym btw, maybe you should change your name . . . or I could just shut up) Anyway, good to see you on the tubes. Hope “you’re banned from our shows from now until hell freezes over” was just a turn of phrase.

    Missin’ you.
