Here are a few reminders for upcoming shows and the like to help you get through the already underway work week. Five musical possibilites that you may want to add to your week’s to-do list:
-
___ Monday: Curse the chilly, gray day. Drink coffee by the quart. Check out Ming Dynasty at Gravity Lounge for a taste of the rock and/or roll infused with the Orient. 7pm. FREE.
- ___ Tuesday: See above. Yet slightly warmer with less cursing. Grab a slice of some of the finest pizza around at Dr. Ho’s Humble Pie down in North Garden while listening to the bluegrass sounds of The ‘ginny Pigdogs. (I just like the name of the band and I love the Humble Pie!) 7:30pm. FREE.
. - ___ Wednesday: Hump Day! Make it through and the weekend is just around the bend. Wear short sleeves and pass on the coffee in favor of Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar as they play host to one of San Diego, CA’s best alternative bands, Grand Ole Party. Snack Truck opens. 8pm. $5.
. - ___ Thursday. Wear shorts today. Start making plans for the weekend. Stop by the store and grab a six-pack (or two). Decisions, decisions. Which will it be: Minus the Bear at Satellite? 8pm. $15adv/$17door. Or a taste of old-time with the Carolina Chocolate Drops at the Gravity? 7:30pm. $15. (Personally I’m heading downtown. How bout you?)
. - ___ Friday. Come down with mysterious illness that only last from 9am to 5pm. Maybe fire up the grill if the rain holds off. Order your Phil Lesh & Friends tickets, whicih go on sale at 10am. Mix up a couple of Jack and Cokes and take it easy because tomorrow is going to be a jam-packed day of music.

ill be on the corner thursday. how can you go wrong with a set list that includes the following songs:
“thanks for the killer game of crisco twister”
“absinthe party at the fly honey warehouse”
“i lost all my money at the cockfights”
“hey is that a ninja up there?”
also, minus the bear is fantastic live. cant wait.
I knew that’s where you were headin’ indie. enjoy the show! I gotta see the Chocolate Drops myself. But I expect a full report from the Corner show on Friday. Deal?
maybe… last time i tried that (http://cvillain.com/2007/12/03/noble-savages-a-revue/) i was torn a new one.
btw… are you stalking me?
I knew that’s where you were headin’ indie.
cause thatd be super.
no i’m not stalking you…although that’s funny…but I think you mentioned a week or so ago that you’d just bought your tickets for minus the bear and I believe british sea power if memory serves. or maybe i’m stalking you. and we’ll only tear you a small new one. at the very least just check in and say…”if you weren’t at satellite last night, you missed one of the all-time, hands down, most kick ass, rollin’ around in the mud, get down on your knees and pray, naturally filled with 23 vitamins and minerals, good to the last drop shows ever!”. “it was cool” will also suffice.
definitely carolina chocolate drops. definitely.
@parlie. it’s the show this week that i’ve circled on my calendar!
Open Air Museum @ R2, featuring Cville’s former resident and best singer… Ezra Hamilton!
What’s the date and time for Ezra mb?
when is R2 going to do something about the sound in that room? i don’t think i’d go to a show there for that reason alone….if you’re going to have music in your club, at least make an attempt at decent sound. those walls are awful.
I’ve heard from reputable sources (though unconfirmed by Rapture) that they won’t be doing shows there at all after the end of April.
wow! i wonder who is going to fill the Orbit/R2/Mono Loco void?
Grand Ole Party sounds pretty rocking and they are playing a bunch of dates with Rogue Wave also (who I constantly kick myself for missing the last few times they rolled through town). Kinda have a Yeah Yeah Yeahs thing about them - and that’s not bad at all.
Mono Loco was a pretty fun place to watch bands play but I never (and I will repeat never) enjoyed watching bands at R2 - even bands I loved. The space was just no good for live music. Good for dancing apparently. Maybe if the bands set up their amps pointing downward from the ceiling and suspended the drummer?
why does it feel like suddenly there seem to be more and more voids popping up?
It’s sad isn’t it? I hope the Box starts having shows more - anyone know what the haps on that is?
yeah, but what about smaller venues that actually have at least a small stage and PA? Nothing! Outback, but most people don’t like going there.
I secretly wonder if we’re not on the downside of a wave that peaked.
if it forces C-ville bands to explore some options out of town, maybe it’s a blessing in disguise? i hear good things about Lynchburg these days, although i don’t believe it, having grown up there.
i’m not believin’ it either…I think (and while it’s not there now) that Staunton could become a little something, something in the next 5-10 years. not a lot of venues (yet) but there is a great little community over there.
i always like visiting Staunton. it’s a very quaint downtown, with what seems like a nice little arts community. i hope it continues to grow!
if there is anyone reading this right now in staunton, they are probably yelling “Shut UP!” “Don’t let our little secret out” “We still like it here!”
i have friends who do jazz gigs in Staunton, but where are the places for rock-oriented bands in Staunton? Are there any?
i really don’t know. i know bands play at the Clock Tower but I’ve never been. Baja has music. But I’m not sure it’s plays to rock bands. And the micro-brewery is home to bluegrass music. (for the most part)
sheesh. i guess the college girls have to go to Hburg or Cville for a little rowdier fun. i bet a venue that had bands would do well there, pulling bands from all 3 places…
see what i’m sayin…5-10 years. someone will see the opportunity.
if only i had the extra $ laying around..
speaking of $, i gotta run. meeting some folks downtown. always nice seeing you in here brian!
later. that was quite the lunchtime flurry.
I think acoustic groove trio opens at 10pm then Ezra and his band will play after… Check’em out and hopefully I’ll see y’all there,
Also today….on wednesday/ tonight…Jive Katze at Rapture! Ok, I have a personal interest to mention that band, but since I seem to be one of the few holding up the torch for Jazz…well check out Jive Katze at Rapture.
yeah ditto byard but i also want to see snack truck! i missed them at macrock, unfortunately. they played at the “spazz showcase”, which even sounds fantastic on paper/screen.
i’ve also seen minus the bear before and they are awesome live. but 15 bucks is way too steep for a show like that. satellite ballroom sometimes frustrates me…
